In a devastating twist of fate that has shattered an Alabama family, 7-year-old Brynleigh Pledger is set to be removed from life support today, just five days after a horrific car crash at the intersection of US Highway 157 and Highway 24 in Moulton, Lawrence County. The young girl, one of twins, fought valiantly against severe brain injuries, but doctors determined the damage was irreversible. Her family has made the selfless decision to donate her organs, transforming unimaginable grief into a beacon of hope for others.
The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. on April 11 when the family’s Chevy Suburban was struck on the side by a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The impact was catastrophic. Brynleigh’s mother, 33-year-old Ashley Hagood, along with her 13-year-old brother Bryant Ballew and her twin sister Bryleigh Pledger, were killed — either at the scene or shortly after. The force of the collision claimed three lives in an instant, leaving the blended family torn apart.
Brynleigh and her 10-year-old brother Bentley were critically injured and airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Bentley has since been taken off a ventilator and is beginning the long road to physical and emotional recovery, though the pain of losing his mother and siblings weighs heavily. Brynleigh, however, endured a much grimmer battle. She suffered extensive brain swelling and bleeding, underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure, and experienced seizures. For five agonizing days, her family clung to every small sign of hope as she lay connected to machines keeping her tiny body alive.
Stepmother Miranda Pledger shared the family’s raw anguish in a heartfelt social media update. “She has fought so incredibly hard,” she wrote, “but the damage to her little brain has taken its toll. Her sweet little body is done.” The decision to withdraw life support came only after exhaustive medical evaluations confirmed there was no path to recovery. Yet in their darkest hour, the family chose to honor Brynleigh’s life through organ donation — a final act of love that could save or improve the lives of multiple recipients, including children and adults awaiting transplants for hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, and more.
This tragedy has rippled through the small community of Moulton and nearby Hartselle. Local leaders, including Moulton Mayor Ryan Jolly, have called for prayers and unity, urging residents to hug their loved ones tighter and support first responders who rushed to the chaotic scene. The crash remains under investigation, with questions lingering about the exact circumstances at the busy intersection.
Brynleigh’s story is a painful reminder of life’s fragility. In one ordinary morning drive, a family of six was forever changed. The surviving brother must now navigate a world without his mother, older brother, and twin sister — a loss no child should ever face. Yet amid the sorrow, Brynleigh’s legacy shines through her gift of life. Organ donation offers a profound silver lining: one child’s untimely end can mean renewed beginnings for strangers facing their own medical battles.
As the family prepares to say goodbye today, their strength in choosing donation reflects deep compassion. They hope her “gifts” will spare other families from similar nightmares. In the midst of profound loss, Brynleigh — the little girl who fought so hard — will continue to touch lives far beyond her seven short years. The community mourns with them, holding space for both grief and gratitude in this bittersweet farewell.
