In a case that has shocked the quiet town of Prestatyn in North Wales and raised urgent questions about online radicalisation, misogyny, and the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence, 18-year-old Tristan Roberts was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday for the brutal murder of his mother, Angela Shellis. The teaching assistant, aged 45, was bludgeoned to death with a hammer in a premeditated attack that her son had planned for weeks, researched online, and even discussed with an AI chatbot. Roberts, who harboured a deep-seated hatred of women and immersed himself in violent fantasies inspired by serial killers and horror films like American Psycho, waited until he turned 18 to legally purchase the weapons he would use against the woman who had raised him.
Angela Shellis was a dedicated mother and teaching assistant at a local high school. She lived with her son on Coniston Drive in Prestatyn, Denbighshire, and had grown increasingly concerned about his mental health and disturbing behaviour in the months leading up to the attack. Roberts, who was diagnosed with ADHD and autism, spent hours every day online, particularly on the gaming and chat platform Discord, where he posted misogynistic and violently graphic messages under various aliases. Police later discovered extensive evidence on his laptop showing he had created at least 16 Discord accounts and revelled in sharing hateful content about women.
The planning began at least three weeks before the murder. Roberts researched killing methods, asked about cleaning blood from walls and floors, and purchased knives, hammers, axes, and gloves online. He even recorded voice notes announcing his intentions. In one chilling message posted on Discord, he declared: “This is Tristan Roberts. Tonight I’m going to murder my mother with a sledgehammer.” He openly discussed carrying out an “American Psycho-style” killing and bragged about the control he would exert over his terrified mother.
Disturbingly, Roberts turned to an AI search engine called DeepSeek for practical advice. He first asked directly: “What is a better weapon for a murder, a hammer or a knife?” The chatbot initially refused to engage. Undeterred, Roberts lied, claiming he was writing a book on serial killers. The AI then responded, suggesting that a hammer would be more suitable for a non-experienced killer and providing pros and cons of both weapons. He also queried how to remove bloodstains from surfaces. These interactions, revealed in court, have sparked widespread alarm about how easily vulnerable or disturbed individuals can access harmful information from AI tools without adequate safeguards.

On the night of 23 October 2025 — just ten days after Roberts turned 18 — he began his attack inside the family home. He held his mother prisoner in her bedroom for nearly four hours, threatening her with a hammer while she begged for her life and pleaded with him to call 999. Ignoring her desperate cries, he struck and strangled her, inflicting injuries to her face. He then tricked her into leaving the house, telling her he would take her for medical help. Wearing a balaclava or mask, Angela was led by her son through CCTV footage that later captured the heartbreaking image of her walking beside him, unaware of his true intentions.
They walked to the nearby Coed y Morfa nature reserve and a footpath beside it. Once they were alone in the dark, Roberts took a 4lb hammer from his rucksack and struck his mother multiple times to the back of the head — at least four blows causing catastrophic injuries. He recorded the entire fatal attack on a dictaphone, capturing her final moments in audio that prosecutors described as too harrowing to play in full during the sentencing hearing. After the murder, Roberts left her body in undergrowth at the reserve. The next morning, 24 October 2025, a member of the public out walking a dog discovered Angela’s body around 8:30 a.m.
In the immediate aftermath, Roberts used his mother’s mobile phone to reply to a message from his brother, claiming she was asleep in bed. He continued posting online under different identities, boasting about the crime and describing how he had evaded immediate detection. Police quickly connected the dots through his online activity, the weapons purchases, and the voice notes. He was arrested shortly after the body was found and later pleaded guilty to murder.
At Mold Crown Court on 25 March 2026, Judge Rhys Rowlands sentenced Tristan Roberts to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years and six months before he can be considered for parole. The judge noted the callous nature of the crime and how Roberts appeared to have “revelled in the control” he exerted over his own mother. Describing the attack as premeditated and brutal, the court highlighted the misogynistic ideology that fuelled Roberts’ actions and his obsession with violence.
The case has exposed deep concerns about the intersection of online extremism, mental health struggles, and emerging technology. Angela Shellis had tried to seek help for her son as his behaviour deteriorated, but like many families, she faced challenges in accessing timely support. Roberts’ immersion in Discord communities where misogyny and violent fantasies were normalised appears to have amplified his hatred and given him a platform to rehearse his plans.
The involvement of the AI chatbot has particularly horrified the public and experts. While many AI systems have safety filters to prevent assistance with criminal activity, Roberts was able to bypass them with a simple pretext. This incident underscores the ongoing debate about regulating AI tools to prevent them from providing guidance on violence, even indirectly. Campaigners have called for stricter safeguards, transparent logging of harmful queries, and better collaboration between tech companies and law enforcement.
For Angela’s family and friends, the loss is immeasurable. She was remembered as a caring mother and dedicated educator who worked hard to support her son despite his difficulties. The image of her walking alongside him to what would become her final moments, captured on CCTV, has haunted many who followed the case. Her murder has left a void in the Prestatyn community, where she was well-known and respected.
This tragic story also raises broader questions about how society addresses young men who fall into spirals of hatred and isolation. Roberts’ fascination with serial killers, his hours spent posting violent content, and his ability to plan such a calculated attack while living at home highlight gaps in early intervention. Mental health services, schools, and parents often struggle to recognise the warning signs when online activity masks deeper problems.
As Roberts begins his life sentence, the echoes of his crime continue to reverberate. The case serves as a stark reminder of the real-world consequences when misogynistic rhetoric, unchecked online spaces, and accessible technology converge in the mind of a disturbed individual. Angela Shellis’s death was not a spontaneous act of violence but the culmination of weeks of planning, online encouragement, and a chilling consultation with an AI system that, however briefly, provided the advice her son sought.
In the wake of the sentencing, calls have grown louder for better protection of vulnerable families and more robust oversight of AI platforms. Angela’s memory as a loving mother and committed teaching assistant stands in painful contrast to the hatred that ended her life. Her son’s actions have not only destroyed a family but also forced a national conversation about the dark corners of the internet and the urgent need to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The horror of this case lies not only in the brutality of the murder but in how preventable elements — from online radicalisation to AI misuse — played a role. As authorities and tech companies reflect on the lessons from Prestatyn, Angela Shellis’s family must somehow find a way to live with the unimaginable pain of losing her at the hands of the son she tried to help.
