PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA – What started as a steamy, secret birthday rendezvous in the back of a Chevrolet Tahoe turned into a blood-soaked horror show when 38-year-old nurse Rene Perez allegedly unleashed savage fury on his married mistress, bludgeoning her to death before dragging her lifeless body along the road until her high heels were “completely worn down, disfigured, and distorted” from grinding against asphalt.
The gruesome discovery came on October 28, 2024, when deputies responded to reports of an unresponsive woman sprawled in a pool of blood on a busy roadway near Lake Worth Beach – just 50 feet from her white Chevy Tahoe SUV. The victim: 35-year-old Linda Campitelli, a devoted mother of two young daughters, beloved nurse, and wife to a doctor. But beneath her picture-perfect family life lurked a two-year extramarital affair with Perez, her former co-worker from Wellington Regional Medical Center and later the Retina Group of Florida.
Court documents and chilling WhatsApp messages reveal the night was supposed to be special. Perez had promised romance – something Campitelli craved after feeling neglected in her marriage. The night before the fatal meetup, she texted nervously: “I LOVE YOU, I FEEL KINDA WEIRD. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT TOMORROW. YOU’VE NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS FOR ME BEFORE AND I FEEL A LITTLE NERVOUS.” Perez reassured her: “LOL, IT’S NO BIG DEAL. JUST TRYING TO SHOW U THAT I CAN BE ROMANTIC. IT PROBABLY WONT BE AS GOOD AS WHAT YOUVE DONE FOR ME.”
He meant it – in the sickest way possible.
Surveillance footage captured Campitelli leaving home in her red outfit, driving to Perez’s former workplace in Wellington. There, in the Tahoe’s folded-down backseat, he had transformed the vehicle into a makeshift love nest: a “HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOPE YOUR BIRTHDAY IS OUT OF THIS WORLD” blanket draped across medical Ultrasorbs sheets stolen from his hospital job – the kind designed to absorb liquids, perhaps anticipating passion… or something far darker.
What happened next was pure brutality. Authorities say Perez attacked Campitelli with savage blunt force, raining blows on her head and torso until she suffered skull fractures, rib breaks, massive internal bleeding, and fatal lacerations to her scalp. The autopsy confirmed: death by blunt trauma, no chance of survival.
But Perez wasn’t done. Investigators allege he then dragged her body – possibly still attached or pulled by the vehicle – along the roadway, causing severe postmortem road rash, scuff marks, and the horrifying wear on her heels that screamed of prolonged, forceful contact with pavement. “The back portion of the victim’s heels was completely worn down, disfigured, and distorted, clearly indicative of being compressed against the roadway while being dragged or moved with force,” the affidavit states in stomach-turning detail.

Blood trails led from the passenger side of the Tahoe straight to her mangled corpse. The scene was a nightmare: a loving mom, dressed for a romantic escape, reduced to a discarded body on a Florida road.
Why? Sources close to the investigation point to panic and obsession. Campitelli had begun showing signs she wanted out – hints of returning to her husband and children, ending the affair for good. Friends told detectives she was torn, guilty, ready to recommit to family life. Perez, married himself, couldn’t handle the rejection. The “romantic” gesture was his desperate bid to prove devotion – but when she signaled she might leave him behind, rage exploded.
Perez was arrested March 10, 2026, in Miami on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. He faces life in prison if convicted. A hidden burner phone, phone pings placing him at the scene, surveillance contradicting his alibi, and those damning messages sealed his fate.
Campitelli’s family is devastated. Her mother revealed fresh horrors: the tire iron believed used in the beating, the betrayal by a trusted colleague. “She was a beautiful soul, a wonderful mother,” family said in statements. “This monster took her from us in the cruelest way.” Her husband and daughters, left to grieve a wife and mom stolen in the prime of life, now face a lifetime without her.
The affair that started at the hospital – two nurses bonding over long shifts – spiraled into obsession. Campitelli, 35, balanced motherhood, marriage to Dr. Jon Campitelli, and her demanding career. Perez, also married, fed her the excitement she missed. Texts show passion, but also tension: her nervousness, his insistence on proving himself “romantic.”
Instead, he proved lethal.
The Tahoe – her husband’s vehicle – became the murder weapon and crime scene. Perez allegedly drove her body to a remote spot, dumped her like trash, then fled. Evidence tampering followed: cleaning attempts, alibis that crumbled under scrutiny.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office called it one of the most vicious cases in recent memory. “This was not just murder – it was desecration,” a detective said. The drag marks alone tell a story of calculated cruelty, ensuring no quick end.
As Perez sits in custody, the world reels at the betrayal. A birthday meant for love became a death sentence. A man who claimed “I can be romantic” instead delivered unimaginable horror – all because the woman he claimed to love showed signs of choosing her family over him.
Linda Campitelli’s story is a stark warning: affairs built on secrets can explode into violence. Her children lost their mother; her husband lost his wife; her friends lost a vibrant soul. And for Perez? The “romance” he promised ended in chains.
The road where her body was found is quiet now. But the echoes of that fatal night – the texts, the blanket, the worn-down heels – will haunt Palm Beach County forever.
