North Yorkshire’s Ravenseat Farm continues to be the backdrop for one of Britain’s most recognised rural families, led by Amanda Owen, widely known as the Yorkshire Shepherdess. At 50, Owen has shared thoughtful insights into raising her nine children, acknowledging the evolving nature of her decisions and how they impact each child differently. In a recent appearance on the Made by Mammas podcast, she discussed homeschooling, revealing that her second-eldest son, Reuben, feels he missed out on an opportunity she later provided to younger siblings.

The Owen family first captured national attention through Channel 5’s Our Yorkshire Farm, which aired from 2018 to 2022, documenting daily life on their remote hill farm in Swaledale. The series highlighted the challenges and joys of managing a large household alongside sheep farming in harsh terrain. Amanda and her then-husband Clive Owen became household names for their hands-on approach, with their children actively involved in farm duties from a young age.
The couple separated in 2022 after 22 years of marriage but maintain a cooperative arrangement, with Clive living nearby and both continuing to co-parent. This setup has been described positively in interviews, contributing to family stability. Recent projects include spin-offs like Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales, focusing on Reuben’s machinery business, and Our Farm Next Door, involving renovation efforts with family participation.
Amanda’s nine children—Raven (oldest, now in her mid-20s), Reuben (21), Miles (18), Edith (16), Violet (15), Sidney (13, currently homeschooled), Annas (12), Clemmie (10), and Nancy (9)—each exhibit unique personalities. Raven has pursued higher education and a scientific career, while Reuben has built a profile through his own television ventures and farming enterprises.
In the podcast discussion, Amanda addressed why not all children were homeschooled. She explained that societal perceptions influenced earlier choices: “Back then, it was kind of beyond the pale. If you did homeschooling, there was a little bit of a general consensus that you were a bit ‘out there.’” Homeschooling has since gained wider acceptance, allowing her more flexibility with younger children like Sidney.
She specifically noted Reuben’s perspective: “I know Reuben, my second oldest, feels a bit cheated because he would have loved to be homeschooled. He’s of the same mindset as Sydney.” Amanda emphasised tailoring education to individual needs, stating children are “not like peas in a pod” and decisions prioritise what suits each one best.
Reflecting on her parenting journey, Amanda admitted gaining confidence over time. Eldest daughter Raven once remarked that Amanda “practiced” on her, with approaches differing by the ninth child. “By the time you get to your ninth child, their childhood is very different to the older children. You get your confidence a bit more,” she shared.

Reuben has emerged as a fan favourite, starring in his own series that follows his heavy machinery work with friends. Recent episodes, including a Christmas special, showcased family collaborations and personal milestones, such as his relationship with girlfriend Jessica Ellwood. Amanda frequently shares updates on social media, recently posting about pride in her children’s farm contributions, featuring Reuben alongside brothers Miles and Sidney.
The family’s post-separation dynamic has evolved smoothly, with Amanda noting reduced tensions benefit everyone. Co-parenting allows Clive’s involvement while providing space. Projects like renovating a neighbouring property demonstrate ongoing collaboration.
Amanda’s openness extends to broader parenting topics. She has discussed risks inherent in farm life, promoting independence while acknowledging hazards. Birth stories vary widely among her children, from planned home births to unexpected scenarios.
Public interest remains strong, with fans appreciating the authenticity portrayed in media appearances. Amanda balances farm management, media commitments, and family life, often highlighting children’s achievements.
Reuben’s ventures reflect his practical skills, honed from early farm responsibilities. His series renewal and festive specials indicate continued viewer engagement.
Amanda’s podcast reflections underscore a common parental theme: adapting strategies as experience grows. Her candid admission about Reuben’s feelings illustrates the nuances of large-family dynamics.
Social media interactions show mutual support, with Amanda celebrating her children’s efforts. Recent posts captured collaborative work, reinforcing family bonds.
The Owens’ story resonates for its portrayal of rural resilience and individuality. Amanda’s emphasis on personalised choices aligns with modern parenting discussions.
