Beloved BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, 63, is ready to trade her iconic forecasts for a new adventure, planning to retire in two years and embark on a European journey with her husband, Steve Randall. What’s next for this TV legend?

For nearly three decades, Carol Kirkwood has been a sunny presence on BBC Breakfast, delivering weather updates with her signature warmth and professionalism. But at 63, the beloved presenter is eyeing a major life change, revealing plans to retire at 65 and set off on a dream adventure across Europe with her husband, Steve Randall, who is 13 years her junior. In a candid interview, Carol shared her vision of leaving the BBC behind to explore new horizons, sparking intrigue about her next chapter. Will this be the start of a new love-filled journey, or will fans miss her too much to let her go?
A Retirement Dream Fueled by Love and Wanderlust
Carol’s retirement plans are as romantic as they are ambitious. Speaking to Saga Magazine, she revealed that she and Steve, a 50-year-old police officer, are inspired by their love for Majorca, where Carol researched her fifth novel, Meet Me at Sunset. “We fell in love with Majorca,” she said, describing the island as the perfect backdrop for her story about a woman escaping a broken romance. The couple’s post-retirement vision includes hitting the road, possibly in a camper van, to explore Europe starting in France. “We’ll either travel in a camper van, or get in the car, cross over to France and just drive,” Carol shared, hinting at a carefree adventure that contrasts with her structured BBC schedule.
With 27 years at BBC Breakfast, Carol has built a loyal fanbase, and her decision to step away at the standard retirement age of 65 will undoubtedly leave viewers heartbroken. Yet, her excitement for this next phase is palpable, fueled by her deep connection with Steve, whom she married in an intimate ceremony at Cliveden House in December 2023. The couple’s love story, which Carol describes as a “Sliding Doors moment,” began unexpectedly at an event neither wanted to attend. “If I hadn’t gone, we would never have met,” she reflected. Their romance blossomed from friendship, with Carol noting, “I wasn’t looking for love; I was happy being single.”

A Second Chance at Love
Carol’s marriage to Steve, her second, followed a “devastating” divorce from her first husband, property developer Jimmy Kirkwood, after 18 years. “Love is lovelier the second time around,” she declared last year, emphasizing that her relationship with Steve feels “better” than her first. The age gap between them—13 years—hasn’t fazed her. “Other people’s opinions about an age gap don’t matter,” she told Saga Magazine. “I don’t feel he is younger than me.” Their wedding, held during Storm Gerrit, was a deeply personal affair with no guests, where they exchanged self-written vows in an emotional ceremony. “It was about us getting married rather than having a big, fancy wedding,” Carol said, highlighting the intimacy that defined their day.
The proposal itself was a romantic surprise, unfolding during a picnic by a Berkshire riverbank in spring 2022. “Although we’d talked about getting married, it still came as a shock,” Carol admitted. Steve’s heartfelt gesture, getting down on one knee, marked the beginning of their journey toward a shared future, one that now includes plans for global exploration.
From BBC Secretary to Weather Icon
Born in Morar, Inverness-shire, to hotelier parents, Carol is one of eight siblings and has carved an impressive career from humble beginnings. After graduating with a commerce degree from what is now Edinburgh Napier University, she joined the BBC as a secretary in London. By 1993, she was a freelance presenter, later working at The Weather Channel before training at the Met Office and joining BBC News in 1998. Today, as the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast, she’s a household name, even after the show’s move to Salford in 2012 left her based in London.

Beyond her on-screen role, Carol is a published author, with Meet Me at Sunset being her latest literary venture. Her novels, often inspired by her travels, reflect her creative spirit, which she plans to nurture further in retirement. But as she prepares to step away from the spotlight, fans are left wondering: Can anyone fill Carol’s shoes on BBC Breakfast?
A New Chapter Awaits
Carol Kirkwood’s announcement signals the end of an era for BBC viewers, but it’s also a celebration of her courage to embrace change. Her plans to travel with Steve reflect a desire to prioritize love and adventure over routine. Will she and Steve find the freedom they seek on the open roads of Europe? And how will her departure reshape BBC Breakfast? As Carol counts down to 65, her story invites us to reflect on our own dreams and the moments that define us. What would you do with a fresh start?
