The disappearance of 55-year-old Lynette Hooker while boating in the Bahamas with her husband Brian has taken a darker turn as her daughter Karli Aylesworth publicly shares alarming claims about the couple’s relationship and releases a voicemail that many are calling disturbingly detached.
Lynette and Brian Hooker, who documented their sailing adventures under the social media name “The Sailing Hookers,” were traveling in a small 8-foot dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands on the night of April 4-5, 2026, when Brian reported that Lynette fell overboard. He told authorities she was holding the boat’s ignition keys, causing the engine to cut off, and that strong currents swept her away despite him throwing a flotation device to her. A large-scale search involving Bahamian authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard was launched, but it has since shifted toward recovery efforts. Brian Hooker was arrested by Royal Bahamas Police on April 8 for questioning in connection with the case, though he denies any wrongdoing.
In interviews with multiple outlets including Fox News, CBS News, and NBC News, Karli Aylesworth, Lynette’s daughter from a previous marriage, expressed deep skepticism about her stepfather’s account. She described their relationship as volatile, alleging a history of domestic violence. Aylesworth claimed Brian had a temper and had previously choked Lynette, with at least one incident reported to police in 2015 (though no charges were filed). She also stated that he had threatened to “throw her overboard” in the past, making the current circumstances feel suspiciously familiar.
“There’s history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard,” Aylesworth told Fox News. “So the fact that this is actually happening makes me believe there’s more to the story.” She added that the couple had a rocky relationship, especially when drinking, and had even split up in recent years before reconciling.
Adding to the unease is the voicemail Brian left for Karli approximately 24 hours after the incident. In a monotone and relaxed tone, he informed his stepdaughter: “Hello, honey, it’s Dad. I just got a call from Hope Town Search and Rescue, and they found the flotation device that I threw to Mom when she fell overboard… They haven’t found her yet, but they’re focusing their efforts on a smaller area and they’re still out there searching today. So I just wanted to update you and let you know. I love you. I’ll talk to you later. Bye-bye.”
Aylesworth described the message as sounding unnaturally calm given the gravity of the situation. She questioned several details in Brian’s story, noting that Lynette was an experienced swimmer and sailor with over 10 years on the water. She also pointed out inconsistencies, such as Lynette supposedly holding the keys when Brian was typically the one driving the dinghy. “I don’t understand how she got the key. Brian’s always driving,” she told CBS News.
Court records obtained by local media reveal a troubled past. In 2005, Brian was accused of choking one of his daughters during an argument over a school textbook but was acquitted by a jury. Police reports also document Lynette’s 2015 claim that Brian choked her, though again no charges resulted. Aylesworth’s grandmother, Lynette’s mother Darlene Hamlett, has backed her granddaughter’s characterization of the marriage as having prior incidents of violence that involved police.
Brian Hooker’s attorney has categorically denied the abuse allegations and any involvement in Lynette’s disappearance, stating that the incident was a tragic accident in rough conditions and high winds. Hooker himself has expressed heartbreak over the event in statements, calling Lynette his “beloved” wife and expressing a desire to assist in the search.
The case has captivated public attention, with many online questioning how an experienced boater could simply fall overboard in a small dinghy, especially while holding the keys. Doubts have also arisen about why Brian reportedly paddled to shore instead of immediately searching more aggressively or dropping anchor.
Lynette Hooker was remembered by family as a vibrant woman chasing retirement dreams through sailing. Her daughter has launched a GoFundMe to support the search and potentially honor her mother’s memory, while calling for a full investigation possibly involving U.S. authorities.
As the investigation continues in the Bahamas, with Brian in custody, the contrasting images — a couple posting idyllic sailing content versus allegations of a violent temper and prior threats — have fueled intense speculation. Aylesworth has emphasized that while she hopes it was a freak accident, the details simply do not add up for her.
The voicemail, now widely shared across media, remains one of the most chilling elements for many observers: a stepfather calmly updating his daughter about a missing mother with little apparent emotion. Whether the case ends as a tragic boating mishap or reveals something more sinister, Lynette’s family is demanding answers and closure.
For now, the waters off Elbow Cay hold their secrets, but the voices of Lynette’s loved ones are growing louder, refusing to let her story disappear quietly.
