A father and son who were drunk after a heavy pub session chased down a family car in a fit of unexplained anger, deliberately ramming it off the road at high speed and killing a four-year-old boy in the process. Owen Maughan, 27, and his father Patrick Maughan, 54, have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for the manslaughter of little Peter Maughan and for inflicting grievous bodily harm on the boy’s father.
The tragedy unfolded on 1 June last year near Dartford in Kent. Owen, who had consumed around 25 beers, was behind the wheel of a Ford Ranger pick-up truck with his father Patrick in the passenger seat. They had been drinking at two pubs in Rochester before spotting a family vehicle driven by Lovell Mahon. Inside were Lovell’s partner Hayley Maughan — who is related to the Maughans — their four-year-old son Peter, and their one-year-old daughter Annarica.
For reasons that remain unclear, the pair flew into a rage and began pursuing the family car. They hurled abuse, drove erratically, and ignored pleas from Lovell, who signaled that children were in the vehicle and offered to resolve any issue peacefully at their house. Hayley, terrified, filmed video clips of the chase and left a desperate voice note for her mother expressing her fear.
The pursuit escalated dangerously as the family left the A2. Owen deliberately moved into the wrong lane and clipped the back of the family car at approximately 60mph. The impact caused the vehicle to roll over multiple times. When Hayley checked the back seat after the crash, she found Peter face down in the grass outside the car. The little boy suffered catastrophic injuries to his head, chest, and abdomen and had no chance of survival.
Lovell Mahon sustained serious injuries, including a skull fracture, and is unlikely to walk again. He now lives every day in a wheelchair, with rehabilitation forming a full-time job and Hayley acting as his nurse. The couple’s one-year-old daughter Annarica escaped physical harm but the entire family has been left emotionally shattered. Hayley described how their once happy life has been reduced to “surviving, not living.”
After causing the devastating crash, Owen and Patrick drove away from the scene. Patrick even stopped briefly to remove the truck’s registration plate in an attempt to avoid detection. Owen later handed himself in at a police station the following day accompanied by his mother. Patrick was arrested at home in Maidenhead, Berkshire, where bodycam footage captured him appearing heavily intoxicated.
At Maidstone Crown Court, Owen was cleared of murder but had already pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He was also convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Lovell. Patrick was found guilty of both manslaughter and grievous bodily harm. On Wednesday, Judge Oliver Saxby KC sentenced Owen to 12 years and eight months in prison and Patrick to 18 years. The judge described their actions as driven by “selfish” anger, telling Owen: “You were angry he had not stopped and wanted to teach him a lesson. This was no ‘nudge’ as you claimed in evidence. You were never going to stop, you didn’t care what happened to Lovell Mahon and his family. ‘We don’t give a f***’, as you had put it.”
Heartbreaking victim impact statements were read in court. Hayley spoke of Peter as her “other half,” saying they were always together and that he was a happy boy who loved school. “Peter didn’t get to start his life. He didn’t get to go on a school trip. He didn’t even get to learn to read. Peter made me who I was. I had him when I was 18 and now he’s gone I’m nothing.” She added that on the day of the crash, Peter’s packed lunch for the next day at school was already prepared in the fridge and his shoes were waiting by the door.
Lovell’s statement revealed the depth of his pain: “The death of Peter has broken me. He was too good for this world. When I found out he was gone words can’t even describe it.” He spoke of his inability to visit his son’s grave easily due to his injuries and the constant anxiety and paranoia he now feels around other drivers.
The case has shocked the local community and highlighted the deadly consequences of road rage fueled by alcohol. The Maughans’ actions not only stole the life of an innocent four-year-old but also destroyed the future of an entire family. Little Peter, described as popular at school and full of joy, will never experience the milestones his parents dreamed of for him.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly anger and intoxication can escalate into irreversible devastation on Britain’s roads. While the court has delivered justice through lengthy sentences, no prison term can restore what was taken from Hayley, Lovell, and their young daughter. The family must now navigate life without their beloved Peter, carrying the weight of unimaginable loss every single day.
As the judge noted, lives have been “irretrievably shattered” by this selfish act of fury. The images of the chase captured on video and the voice notes left in panic paint a terrifying picture of the final moments before the crash. For the surviving family members, the road to any form of healing will be long and painful, marked by grief, physical limitations, and the constant absence of a little boy who brought so much light into their lives.
Road safety campaigners may point to this case as another example of the need for stricter enforcement against dangerous driving, especially when combined with alcohol. The fact that both men continued their pursuit despite knowing children were in the car only adds to the horror and the sense of preventable tragedy.
In the end, a four-year-old boy’s life was cut short in the most brutal way, all because two drunk men chose rage over reason. The sentences handed down reflect the severity of their crimes, but for Peter’s devastated parents, justice will never feel complete without their son back in their arms.
