In a curt announcement of just 37 words about Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool, Newcastle United offered no thanks or well-wishes. To the fans, the former hero has turned into a traitor.
Isak’s Ugly Exit from Newcastle
Alexander Isak “slipped away” to Stockholm at 1 a.m. while joining up with the Swedish national team, shortly after Newcastle issued a brief 37-word statement on his record-breaking £125 million sale to Liverpool – and supporters raged, branding him a “traitor” for forcing the club’s hand.
Newcastle didn’t even thank Isak after he signed a long-term deal with Liverpool, nor did they mention his goal that secured the Carabao Cup – their first trophy in 56 years – or his tally of 62 goals and 11 assists in 109 appearances. Instead, the statement simply read: “Newcastle United confirm the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British record fee. The Sweden international joined from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances.”

Isak contributed to 73 goals in 109 games for Newcastle, including the one that brought home the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle’s terse announcement on the transfer.
The manner of Isak’s departure – refusing to play and accusing the club of broken promises – infuriated Newcastle fans. On social media, many mocked the club’s “blunt” statement: “A short note for a man with short morals,” “Brilliant, a fitting payback.” Others expressed regret that their idol, who helped them reach the Champions League twice, ended his stint in such a “childish way, ruining his legacy.”
Meanwhile, Isak has completed his medical at Liverpool, signed a six-year contract, and become the most expensive signing in English football history, surpassing Moises Caicedo and Florian Wirtz. He said: “I’m very proud to be here, I want to score goals and win every trophy with the team.”

Newcastle Fans View Isak as a Traitor
On their end, Newcastle wasted no time reinvesting: splashing £69 million on Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart, the 6’6″ striker nicknamed “Woltemessi” by Manuel Neuer, and another £55 million on Yoane Wissa, who netted 19 Premier League goals last season.
