In the quiet suburb of Berkeley Township, New Jersey, a seemingly ordinary family home on Fairwood Drive became the scene of unimaginable horror early Tuesday morning, March 10, 2026. But according to shaken neighbors, warning signs were flashing just days earlier.
Sources close to the investigation and local accounts describe how Vaughn Stewart, 37, of Maplewood, arrived at the residence of his estranged wife Deonna Stewart two days prior. He reportedly took two of the couple’s three young children away from the home—only to return them later that same evening. What followed was a prolonged, heated confrontation that lasted approximately seven minutes, with furious shouting audible throughout the neighborhood.
“That argument was intense—non-stop yelling for a solid seven minutes,” one neighbor recounted, speaking on condition of anonymity. “It sounded like everything was boiling over.”
Tragically, those raised voices foreshadowed the deadly events that unfolded shortly after. In the pre-dawn hours, Vaughn allegedly forced his way into the home where Deonna, 38, lived with her parents, Allan Russell, 61, and Michelle Russell, 60. Inside, he shot and killed the elderly couple. Deonna fled in panic, running down the street in a desperate bid for survival. Vaughn pursued her relentlessly, firing multiple shots until she collapsed fatally wounded about 50 yards from the house.
He then walked back inside and turned the gun on himself, ending his life in an apparent suicide. Responding officers from Berkeley Township Police, assisted by the Ocean County Regional SWAT Team, discovered the grim scene: two bodies inside the residence, Deonna’s outside, and Vaughn deceased from a self-inflicted wound. Shell casings littered the area, painting a picture of calculated fury.
Remarkably, the three children—left inside during the entire ordeal—emerged physically unharmed. They are now receiving support from the Department of Child Protection and Permanency as the community grapples with the aftermath.
This devastating incident highlights the dangers of escalating domestic disputes, especially in separated relationships involving children. Authorities have confirmed the couple had been living apart, with Deonna and the kids staying with her parents for safety and stability.
The neighborhood remains in shock, with residents reflecting on the loud argument as a missed red flag in a chain of events that ended four lives. As investigations continue, the focus turns to supporting the orphaned children and preventing similar tragedies through awareness and intervention in high-conflict separations.
