A devastating timeline has revealed that baby Preston Davey may have had eight separate opportunities to be rescued before the 13-month-old suffered months of abuse and ultimately lost his life.
The heartbreaking revelations emerged following the convictions of adoptive father Jamie Varley and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, who were found guilty of offenses connected to Preston’s death and abuse.
Now, public attention is turning toward a series of warning signs that appeared in the months before the toddler died—warning signs that, in hindsight, may have provided multiple opportunities for intervention.
A Tragic Journey Through the Care System
Preston entered foster care shortly after birth after being removed from his biological mother. He later moved into the home of Varley, a teacher, and McGowan-Fazakerley as part of an adoption placement.
According to evidence heard in court, Preston initially appeared to be a happy and energetic child. However, prosecutors said that within weeks of entering the couple’s care, troubling patterns began to emerge.

Over the following months, the toddler would make several visits to medical professionals while social workers and other adults regularly interacted with the family. Despite those encounters, concerns never escalated into the type of intervention that might have protected him.
The First Warning Signs
One of the earliest incidents occurred in May 2023 when emergency services received an incomplete call connected to the household.
Although the circumstances raised questions, no further action ultimately followed.
Weeks later, Preston was rushed to hospital after becoming unresponsive. Medical staff noticed bruising on the child but accepted explanations that the injuries had resulted from ordinary childhood accidents while learning to crawl.
Another hospital visit followed in June when healthcare workers again observed signs of injury.
Once more, explanations provided by the adults caring for Preston were accepted.
Social Workers See a Child in Distress
As concerns slowly accumulated, social workers also continued making visits to the home.
During one visit, Preston reportedly appeared pale, subdued, and different from his usual self.
The change in behavior was attributed to illness rather than possible abuse.
Only days later, another major red flag emerged when doctors diagnosed the toddler with a fractured elbow after discovering he could not move his arm properly.
The injury was explained as an accident involving a cot, and no safeguarding intervention followed.
The next day, another social worker visited the family. Court testimony later revealed that questions briefly surfaced about whether there could be an underlying problem, but those concerns were ultimately dismissed.
Disturbing Comments Ignored
One of the most alarming moments occurred when Varley allegedly confided disturbing thoughts to a colleague.
According to evidence presented during the trial, he reportedly spoke about wanting to drown or suffocate the child.
The colleague did not report the remarks after being assured that social services were already aware of the situation.
Just days later, another opportunity for intervention passed when concerns about Varley’s mental health prompted a visit from his headteacher.
No immediate safeguarding concerns were raised during that encounter.
A Carefully Crafted Public Image
Throughout this period, the couple projected an image of a loving family.
Photographs shared publicly showed smiling moments and family outings.
Behind the scenes, however, prosecutors described a much darker reality.
Experts told jurors that Preston developed signs associated with severe trauma. Witnesses observed a dramatic change in his demeanor, describing him as withdrawn and emotionally detached.
A child abuse specialist referred to this behavior as “frozen watchfulness,” a response often seen in children living in abusive environments.
Fatal Abuse Revealed
On July 27, 2023, Preston was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Varley reportedly claimed the child had suffered an accident involving bath water.
Investigators soon found inconsistencies in that account.
Medical examinations later revealed more than 40 injuries across Preston’s body, including numerous bruises, a fractured arm, and evidence of severe abuse.
Experts concluded that the toddler died from acute upper airway obstruction.
The findings led to criminal charges and eventually convictions against both men.
Calls for Accountability
The case has sparked serious questions about child protection systems and whether warning signs were overlooked.
Family members have publicly demanded answers, while an independent safeguarding review is now examining the actions of agencies involved in Preston’s care.
For many observers, the most haunting aspect of the case is the realization that concerns surfaced repeatedly before the child’s death.
Eight separate opportunities emerged to recognize that something was wrong.
Eight chances to intervene.
And eight moments that, tragically, failed to save a little boy whose life ended far too soon.
