Authorities in Mississippi are investigating a double homicide after a father and daughter from the Memphis area were found shot to death on a rural road in Panola County. Investigators say the victims, 42-year-old Victor Gonzalez and his 19-year-old daughter Serenity Gonzalez, were discovered early Sunday morning along River Road near Sardis. The case has raised questions about what happened during the trip the pair reportedly took to purchase a PlayStation 5 they had seen listed on Facebook Marketplace.
According to the Panola County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the area around 7 a.m. Sunday after a passerby called 911 to report what appeared to be a single-vehicle accident. When authorities arrived at the scene, however, they quickly realized the situation was far more serious. Investigators said both victims appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.

Authorities said the double homicide may have occurred either late Saturday or early Sunday, though investigators have not yet confirmed the exact timeline. Detectives are continuing to examine evidence from the scene as they work to determine what happened before the victims were found on the remote road.
Family members later identified the victims and shared details about their lives. Jessie Waterman said Victor Gonzalez was his father and Serenity Gonzalez was his sister. Waterman also shared photos of the two and described them as hardworking individuals who worked as electricians on residential projects in the Memphis area.
Waterman said the family had been told that tire tracks at the scene suggested the victims might have been attempting to flee from someone before the shooting occurred. However, authorities have not confirmed that information publicly. Investigators have not announced a motive, and officials say the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear.
Sheriff Shane Phelps has spoken with family members of the victims but has not publicly disclosed details about what may have led to the deadly incident. Authorities continue to collect information and analyze evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Neighbors in the area described River Road as a quiet and relatively isolated location. Connie Donahou, who lives nearby, said the road is not heavily traveled and is mostly known to residents who live in the surrounding area.
“It’s got houses up that end and houses up the other end, but very few in between,” Donahou said. “It’s not a real busy road, but if you live around here, you know about this road. You pretty much have to live around here to know about this road.”
Authorities are asking anyone who may have information related to the case to come forward. The Panola County Sheriff’s Office says tips can be submitted through CrimeStoppers of Panola County by calling 662-209-2011 as investigators continue to work toward identifying those responsible.
