A major investigation involving the disappearance of NBC Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, has intensified, with law enforcement officials executing searches and gathering evidence at multiple locations connected to the family in Tucson, Arizona. The probe — now spanning over a week — is focused on puzzling clues, forensic findings and unanswered questions surrounding the last known movements of Nancy, who vanished from her home under what authorities describe as suspicious circumstances.
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on February 1 after failing to attend a regular Sunday church service, according to official reports. Prior to her disappearance, she had spent Saturday evening at the home of her daughter, Annie Guthrie, and Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni, who also happens to be Savannah Guthrie’s brother-in-law. According to law enforcement, Cioni was the last person to see Nancy before she returned to her own residence late Saturday night.

Investigators arrived at Nancy’s house just after noon on Sunday after a family friend raised the alarm about her absence. Deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department discovered evidence inside and outside the property that raised immediate concern. Bloodstains were found near the doorway and samples collected at the scene were later confirmed to be Nancy’s DNA, according to law enforcement sources. Officers also noted that crucial surveillance devices, including a doorbell camera, had been disabled or removed during the night, complicating efforts to reconstruct her final hours.
The timeline released by authorities places critical footage and digital tracking data in the early hours of Sunday morning. At approximately 1:47 a.m., Nancy’s doorbell camera was disconnected, and later, at 2:28 a.m., her pacemaker stopped sending information to her mobile devices. These unexplained gaps have fueled suspicion that something untoward occurred while the elderly woman was inside her home.
In the wake of the initial missing person report, law enforcement classified the situation as more than a routine disappearance and elevated the case to a criminal investigation. The sheriff’s department described the house as an active crime scene. Authorities say they do not believe Nancy left the house voluntarily and say her limited mobility and reliance on medication make the circumstances all the more troubling.
Amid the scrutiny surrounding the case, police have not publicly named any suspects or persons of interest. However, sheriff’s officials have acknowledged in press briefings that all individuals who had contact with Nancy leading up to her disappearance are being examined, including Cioni. According to statements by the Pima County Sheriff, investigators “are actively looking at everyone” and have not ruled out any potential leads.
Conflicting reports have circulated in media outlets about Cioni’s involvement, including unverified claims that evidence linked to him or his vehicle was seized by police. A statement from law enforcement clarified that no suspect or person of interest has officially been identified, and that speaking to family members and associated individuals is a routine part of the ongoing probe rather than an indication of culpability.
In a separate twist, authorities have pursued federal charges against a man in California who allegedly posed as the suspected abductor and sent fake ransom communication to the Guthrie family. The suspect is accused of sending text messages demanding payment in Bitcoin using an internet phone line — a development that added an unusual and distressing dimension to an already high-profile investigation. Federal agents say these messages have not been confirmed as credible or directly tied to the disappearance itself.
As part of the broader investigation, the FBI and local sheriff’s deputies have expanded their search tactics. Reports indicate that law enforcement has examined septic systems and other nearby areas in an effort to recover potential evidence. A reward has also been offered for information leading to Nancy’s whereabouts, and the family has made public appeals for her safe return.
Savannah Guthrie — a veteran journalist and co-anchor on NBC — stepped away from her scheduled professional duties following her mother’s disappearance, including her planned coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics. In emotional public statements, she, along with her siblings, urged anyone with information to come forward, and called for proof that her mother is still alive. The family’s pleas have drawn nationwide attention to the investigation, as well as messages of support from the public.
Despite intensive efforts by local and federal law enforcement, Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown, and investigators continue to piece together evidence in what officials describe as a complex and evolving case. The sheriff’s department maintains an open line with the public for tips and is urging caution against speculation so as not to compromise the integrity of the ongoing process.
