Authorities say a suspect accused of killing three women in southern Utah has been taken into custody after a dramatic multi-state manhunt that stretched across several parts of the American Southwest. The suspect, identified as Ivan Miller, was arrested in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, after investigators tracked a stolen vehicle linked to the crimes.

According to law-enforcement officials, the series of events began in Wayne County, Utah, where an elderly woman in her 80s was found dead inside her home in the town of Lyman. Investigators believe the suspect killed the woman and then stole her vehicle before leaving the area.

Authorities say the suspect then drove the stolen car toward a trailhead near Capitol Reef National Park, a popular destination for hikers and outdoor visitors. There, two additional victims — women believed to be in their 30s and 60s — were discovered dead near a hiking trail. The victims were reportedly found by their husbands, who alerted authorities after discovering the scene.

Investigators believe the suspect then stole another vehicle belonging to one of the victims and fled the area. The stolen car was later detected by license-plate tracking systems as it traveled across southern Utah and into northern Arizona. The vehicle eventually appeared in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, where law enforcement moved in to make an arrest.

Police arrested Miller without incident. Authorities say he was found carrying a handgun and a large knife when he was taken into custody. He is currently being held in the Archuleta County Detention Center while investigators continue to gather evidence and coordinate with Utah authorities regarding the homicide charges.

Court documents indicate that Miller allegedly told investigators he committed the crimes to obtain vehicles and credit cards after becoming stranded in Utah during a cross-country trip. Officials say he had previously damaged his own vehicle after hitting an elk and later sold it to a towing company, leaving him without transportation.

The killings shocked residents of the rural communities near Capitol Reef National Park, an area known for its quiet towns and outdoor recreation. Local schools temporarily closed and authorities urged residents to remain cautious while the suspect was still at large.

Officials say there is no indication that the victims knew the suspect and believe the attacks may have been crimes of opportunity. Investigators from multiple agencies are continuing to process evidence from several crime scenes in Wayne County as the case moves forward in court.

Law-enforcement officials say the arrest brings some relief to the community, but they acknowledge that many questions remain about how the violent series of events unfolded and why the victims were targeted. The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare potential charges related to the triple homicide.
