Police in Cincinnati say they believe answers are within reach following the killing of 20-year-old aspiring rapper and young mother Lanyah Dawson, whose body was discovered in a wooded area of Mount Airy Forest.
“We believe someone knows,” investigators said, as they publicly urged witnesses to come forward more than a week after Dawson was found fatally shot.
Her body was located beside eight shell casings, a detail police say underscores the deliberate nature of the attack. Detectives have described the killing as “personal” and “intentional,” noting that evidence suggests the suspect may have known Dawson.
As the investigation continues, one question remains unanswered: who left a young mother to die alone in the woods — and why?

A Life Cut Short
Dawson was more than a crime statistic. She was a 20-year-old artist trying to build a future through music, and a mother to a 1-year-old daughter who now must grow up without her.
Friends say Dawson had dreams of turning her passion for rap into a career, often recording music late into the night while balancing the responsibilities of motherhood.
“She loved her baby,” one acquaintance said quietly. “Everything she did was for her.”
That future ended abruptly when Dawson was found shot multiple times, her body abandoned in a secluded area of Mount Airy Forest.
A Deliberate Killing
According to police, the evidence at the scene indicates the shooting was not random.
Eight shell casings were recovered near Dawson’s body, and investigators say the location suggests she was intentionally brought to the wooded area — or at least targeted there.
“This was not an accident,” one investigator said. “This was deliberate.”
Detectives believe the suspect may have been someone Dawson knew or trusted, a theory supported by the nature of the attack and the lack of signs pointing to a robbery or random violence.
Police Urge Silence to End
For days, authorities released limited information as they worked behind the scenes. Now, police say the case has reached a critical stage.
“We believe someone has information,” a police spokesperson said. “It may be a friend, an acquaintance, or someone who heard something and didn’t realize its importance at the time.”
Investigators emphasized that even small details — a conversation, a text message, a vehicle seen near the area — could help identify the person responsible.
“This person is still out there,” police said. “And someone knows who they are.”
A Forest Turned Crime Scene
Mount Airy Forest, one of Cincinnati’s largest and most frequented green spaces, is typically associated with trails, families, and recreation. In this case, it became the setting for a homicide that has shaken the community.
Residents expressed shock that such violence could occur in a place many consider peaceful.
“You don’t expect something like this here,” one local resident said. “Especially not to someone so young.”
Police have not disclosed how long Dawson’s body was in the woods before it was discovered, but confirmed she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Child Left Behind
Perhaps the most haunting detail of the case is the life Dawson leaves behind.
Her 1-year-old daughter, too young to understand what has happened, is now without a mother — while the person responsible remains free, at least for now.
Family members say Dawson was deeply involved in her child’s life and rarely went anywhere without checking in.
“She always came home,” one relative said. “Until she didn’t.”
Investigators Tighten the Net
Police say they are reviewing phone records, social media activity, and surveillance footage from areas surrounding Mount Airy Forest. Detectives are also interviewing people from Dawson’s personal and professional circles.
While no arrests have been announced, authorities say they are “closing in” on answers.
“This case is active,” police said. “And it’s moving.”
They stressed that fear should not prevent witnesses from coming forward, noting that tips can be provided anonymously.
A Community Demands Justice
As word of the killing spread, vigils and online tributes began appearing in Dawson’s memory. Friends shared clips of her music, photos of her smiling with her daughter, and messages demanding justice.
“She didn’t deserve this,” one post read. “None of this.”
Community leaders echoed calls for cooperation with police, urging anyone with information to speak up.
“This isn’t just about one life,” one organizer said. “It’s about stopping someone who did this from hurting someone else.”
“Someone Knows”
Police say they chose to publicly emphasize that message for a reason.
“Someone knows,” investigators repeated. “And that person needs to come forward.”
As the case moves forward, detectives say they remain focused not only on solving the crime, but on ensuring Dawson’s daughter grows up knowing her mother mattered.
“This victim mattered,” a police official said. “Her life mattered.”
For now, the investigation continues — and a family waits for answers, a child waits for a mother who will never return, and a city waits for justice.
