A devastating incident off the coast of Withernsea, East Yorkshire, has claimed the lives of a devoted mother and a selfless passerby, while the search persists for her 15-year-old daughter. On Friday, January 2, 2026, Sarah Keeling, 45, and her daughter Grace Keeling were wave-watching near the Central Promenade when tragedy struck in freezing conditions with massive waves.
Grace was suddenly swept into the treacherous North Sea by a huge rogue wave while on concrete steps leading to the beach. Hearing her daughter’s cries for help, Sarah immediately waded into the icy waters in a desperate attempt to reach her. Nearby, 67-year-old Mark Ratcliffe, a stranger with no connection to the family, heroically joined the rescue effort, braving 12-foot waves to assist.
Witnesses described frantic scenes as cafe staff threw a life ring toward Grace, which she briefly grasped before losing hold in the rough seas. Rescuers came agonizingly close – within inches – to saving her, but the powerful currents proved overwhelming.
A massive emergency response involving over 100 personnel swung into action, including RNLI lifeboats from multiple stations, coastguard helicopters, fire crews, and ambulance services. Despite tireless efforts in appalling weather, Mark Ratcliffe was pulled from the water unconscious shortly before 10pm and pronounced dead at the scene. Sarah Keeling’s body was recovered the same evening.
Searches for Grace continued through Saturday but were hampered by blizzards and sub-zero temperatures, leading to a temporary suspension. As of January 5, operations remain ongoing with increased police presence in the area, though hopes diminish in the harsh conditions.
Tributes have poured in for the victims. Ratcliffe’s family called him a “true selfless hero with a heart of gold,” adding: “So many lives are now shattered… A loving husband, father, son, brother and the best grandad.” His son vowed to make him proud, praising emergency services for their relentless work.
Sarah was remembered as a “caring, loving person” by friends, with one describing her as “genuine and respectful.” The close-knit Withernsea community, population around 6,500, is in mourning, rallying with support for rescuers and families.
This tragedy highlights the unpredictable dangers of Britain’s coastline in winter, where rogue waves and rip currents can strike suddenly. Authorities frequently warn against approaching edges during rough seas, even for innocent activities like wave-watching.
As families receive specialist support, the nation reflects on the profound bravery and loss. Ratcliffe’s instinctive heroism and Sarah’s maternal sacrifice underscore human compassion in crisis, leaving an indelible mark on all involved.
