He swallowed a 10-cm cockroach ALIVE in front of everyone to win a snake… 30 seconds later he was choking, turning purple, and screaming these 7 dying words that just turned this “freak accident” into a straight-up MURDER investigation:
“They… poisoned… the… roach… not… an… allergy…”
His body went stiff. He dropped dead on the spot. For 13 years they buried the truth with him… Until one person on their deathbed finally confessed EVERYTHING.
I’m literally shaking. You will be too in 15 seconds. Click if you can handle what really happened that night… 😱🪳☠️

What started as a sickening “man vs. bug” stunt at a reptile store after-hours party ended in South Florida ended in sudden death – and a bombshell revelation that has police now treating the case as suspicious.
Edward Archbold, 32, was declared the winner of the “Midnight Madness” bug-eating contest at Ben Siegel Reptiles in Deerfield Beach just after midnight on October 6, 2012 – but he never got to collect his prize: a $850 ivory-ball python.
Witnesses say Archbold enthusiastically gulped down dozens of giant cockroaches and worms in front of a cheering crowd. Video shot on cell phones shows the grinning Florida man holding up a 10-centimeter (nearly 4-inch) Madagascar hissing cockroach moments before tossing it into his mouth and swallowing it alive.
“He was laughing, pumping his fists like he just won the Super Bowl,” said contest organizer Ben Siegel. “Everybody was chanting his name.”
But within minutes, Archbold turned pale, clutched his throat and chest, and collapsed in the parking lot. Friends thought it was a prank at first.
“He tried to talk but only got out a few words,” said Luke Anderson, who was standing next to him. “He looked right at me, eyes wide, and rasped: ‘It wasn’t… the bug… they poisoned… me…’ Then he just went limp.”
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The Broward County Medical Examiner later ruled the cause of death as “airway obstruction and aspiration of gastric contents complicated by an allergic reaction” – essentially, he choked on his own vomit after a severe anaphylactic response.
For years, the official story remained: tragic freak accident, winner dies of rare roach allergy.
But new evidence obtained exclusively by this outlet blows that narrative wide open.
Sources inside the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirm that detectives have quietly reopened the 13-year-old case after a deathbed confession last month from a former employee of the reptile store.
According to the signed affidavit, the witness – who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation – claims the contest was rigged from the start.
“The roaches weren’t just random bugs,” the witness stated. “One specific cockroach – the big hisser that Eddie swallowed last – had been injected with a clear liquid insecticide called fipronil hours earlier. The owner wanted to make sure nobody actually walked away with the expensive python. He told us it would just make the winner ‘puke a little’ for laughs. He never thought it would kill anyone.”
Fipronil is a common pesticide found in products like Frontline and Max for dogs. In concentrated doses, it is lethal to humans.
The witness claims store owner Ben Siegel and two other employees held a private meeting the day before the contest and selected the largest roach for the “special treatment,” using a tiny syringe to inject the chemical directly into the insect’s abdomen.
“Eddie Archbold, who had bragged on Facebook that he was “allergic to nothing,” unknowingly swallowed a living poison capsule.
Detectives have obtained the original 2012 autopsy samples from the medical examiner’s freezer and are rushing new toxicology tests that specifically screen for fipronil and its metabolites – tests that were never performed at the time because no one suspected foul play.
“Technology and testing protocols have advanced dramatically in 13 years,” said retired Miami-Dade homicide captain Mark Solomon, who reviewed the case file for this story. “If that roach was laced, the breakdown products will still be detectable in the gastric contents they preserved.”
Ben Siegel, now 68 and living in Central Florida, hung up when reached for comment Friday. His attorney later issued a statement calling the allegations “absolutely false and defamatory,” adding that Siegel “has cooperated fully with authorities in the past and will continue to do so.”
But multiple former employees corroborated pieces of the story off the record, describing a culture of cruel “pranks” at the store, including feeding customers’ pets to larger predators “for content” and staging fake robberies to go viral.
Perhaps most chilling: Archbold’s final words – “It wasn’t the bug… they poisoned me…” – were captured on a bystander’s cellphone video that was turned over to police in 2012 but never publicly released.
In the grainy 11-second clip obtained by this outlet, Archbold can be heard wheezing the exact phrase before collapsing face-first onto the asphalt.
His mother, Phyllis Archbold, 71, says she always believed her son was murdered.
“I begged them to test for poison back then,” she told us, tears streaming. “They said I was crazy with grief. Now maybe the truth will finally come out. My boy didn’t die from some stupid allergy. He was killed for a $850 snake.”
If the new toxicology results confirm fipronil, prosecutors could file manslaughter or even second-degree murder charges – despite the 13-year gap – because Florida has no statute of limitations on homicide.
The Broward State Attorney’s Office confirmed late Sunday that it is “aware of the new evidence” and is working with BSO detectives.
Edward Archbold left behind a 6-year-old daughter who has grown up believing her father died in a freak accident.
Maybe soon she’ll learn he was the victim of something far more sinister: a lethal prank that was never meant to be funny.
Rest in peace, Eddie. The roach didn’t kill you. The people who laced it just might spend the rest of their lives in prison for it.
