A 15-year-old boy from Long Island has been the subject of an intense search after disappearing on January 9, 2026, following his departure from school. School surveillance footage captured the moment the teenager left campus, marking the beginning of a journey that led him into the heart of New York City—and into mystery.
The boy, identified in public appeals as Thomas Medlin from Saint James, reportedly left The Stony Brook School around 3:30 p.m. that Friday afternoon. Witnesses and video evidence indicate he hurried to the nearby Stony Brook Long Island Rail Road station, where he boarded a train heading toward Manhattan. Approximately two hours later, he appeared on security cameras at the iconic Grand Central Terminal around 5:30 p.m., looking composed as he navigated the bustling station.
What happened next remains unclear, fueling widespread concern among family, friends, and authorities. Initial reports suggested the teen may have traveled to meet someone he connected with online through a popular gaming platform, a detail shared by his family in early pleas for information. However, investigators have since clarified that no direct link to criminal activity or such meetings has been established in the case.
Extensive review of video footage and digital records by Suffolk County Police has pieced together more of his movements. The teen was traced to the pedestrian walkway on the Manhattan Bridge later that evening, around 7:06 p.m. His cellphone showed its final activity just three minutes later, at 7:09 p.m. Disturbingly, a nearby surveillance camera recorded a splash in the water below at 7:10 p.m., with no further sightings of him leaving the bridge via any exit paths.
Authorities have emphasized that, based on current evidence, the disappearance does not appear to involve foul play. Search efforts have included reviewing additional footage from the area, including potential rideshare or vehicle cameras, and appealing to the public for any tips from those in Lower Manhattan or near the bridge that evening.
The teenager is described as white, approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds, with glasses. He was last seen wearing a black jacket with red stripes, dark sweatpants with white stripes, and carrying a black backpack. His family has expressed profound worry, describing his actions as completely out of character and urging anyone with information to come forward.
As days turn into weeks since his disappearance, the case highlights the vulnerabilities teens face in an increasingly connected world, where routine school days can lead to unexpected paths. Police continue their investigation, hoping for answers that bring the boy home safely or provide closure to his loved ones. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Suffolk County Police or local authorities immediately.
