Dramatic dashcam footage released on Tuesday has captured the heartbreaking final moments of Boris Gurman, 69, and Sofia Gurman, 61, as the devoted couple confronted one of the gunmen in the early stages of the deadly ISIS-inspired terror attack at Bondi Beach, ultimately losing their lives in a selfless act of courage.
The video, which surfaced on social media and was verified by multiple outlets including NBC News, ABC Australia, and CNN, shows Boris, a retired mechanic, tackling Sajid Akram, 50, near the suspects’ silver hatchback on Campbell Parade. An ISIS flag was draped over the vehicle’s windshield. Boris wrestles a rifle from Akram’s hands, knocking him to the ground, while Sofia stands nearby, assisting in the confrontation. Moments later, Akram reportedly retrieves another weapon and fatally shoots the couple – the first victims of the rampage that claimed 15 lives during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event on December 14, 2025.
Drone footage from later in the attack shows the Gurmans lying motionless side by side on the pavement, having died in each other’s arms, according to reports from The Sydney Morning Herald and other sources.
Family members identified the couple in the footage and released a poignant statement expressing profound grief mixed with pride. “We are heartbroken by the sudden and senseless loss of our beloved Boris and Sofia Gurman,” the statement read. “They had been married for 34 years, with their 35th wedding anniversary approaching in January. We were looking forward to celebrating Sofia’s 62nd birthday on Wednesday 17th of December.”
The family described Boris as a generous retired mechanic known for his quiet strength and willingness to help anyone, while Sofia, an Australia Post employee, was beloved by colleagues and the community. “Bondi locals, together they lived honest, hardworking lives and treated everyone they met with kindness, warmth and respect,” the statement continued. “Boris and Sofia were devoted to their family and to each other. They were the heart of our family, and their absence has left an immeasurable void.”
The Gurmans’ actions, the family added, “encapsulate who Boris and Sofia were – people who instinctively and selflessly tried to help others.” “While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness.”
Witnesses and officials have hailed the couple as heroes whose intervention may have delayed the attackers, potentially saving lives. A woman who captured part of the incident on her dashcam told Reuters that Boris “charged straight toward the danger, using all his strength trying to wrestle away the gun and fighting to the death.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese referenced their bravery in statements condemning the attack.
The Russian-Jewish couple, longtime Bondi residents, were walking along the parade when they spotted Sajid Akram unloading weapons from the car parked near a pedestrian bridge. As others sought cover, Boris seized the moment to disarm him, with Sofia by his side.
Their story is one of several acts of heroism emerging from the tragedy. Fruit shop owner Ahmed al-Ahmed later tackled Sajid after he retrieved another firearm, disarming him despite being shot multiple times. Businessman Reuven Morrison, 61, hurled bricks at the gunmen before being killed.
The father-son duo, Sajid and Naveed Akram, 24, opened fire on the crowd below the bridge, targeting the Hanukkah celebration. Sajid was killed in a police shootout, while Naveed, critically wounded, faces multiple murder and terrorism charges.
Other victims included 10-year-old Matilda Britvan, whose younger sister Summer’s innocent question about her return has touched the nation; Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, a father of five and event organizer; Holocaust survivor Alex Kleytman, 87; and former police officer Peter Meagher.
Over 40 were injured, including two officers in critical condition. The attack, Australia’s deadliest terror incident, has prompted reviews of gun laws and intelligence, with the Akrams’ legally owned firearms and prior Philippines travel under scrutiny.
Memorials at Bondi Pavilion continue to grow, with thousands leaving tributes. Vigils have drawn community leaders and politicians, emphasizing unity against antisemitism.
Fundraisers for the Gurmans’ family, including a GoFundMe for their son in his 30s, have garnered significant support. Colleagues from Australia Post paid respects at the pavilion.
As funerals proceed amid the holiday season, the Gurmans’ legacy of quiet kindness and extraordinary courage endures, inspiring a nation mourning profound loss.
