A once-vibrant Weinland Park home, the very site where Dr. Spencer Tepe and his wife Monique exchanged vows nearly five years ago, has become the backdrop for a chilling double homicide that has left a prestigious neighborhood reeling and investigators hunting for a killer.
Columbus police discovered the bodies of Spencer Tepe, 37, and Monique Tepe, 39, on the morning of December 30, 2025, inside their residence on the 1400 block of North Fourth Street. The couple had been shot — Spencer multiple times, Monique at least once in the chest — in what authorities are treating as a targeted double homicide. No firearm was recovered at the scene, and there were no obvious signs of forced entry.
The grim discovery came after concerned colleagues at Athens Dental Depot, where Spencer worked as a dentist, raised alarms when he uncharacteristically failed to show up for work. Practice owner Dr. Mark Valrose called police around 9 a.m., noting it was “very out of character” for the reliable Tepe, who commuted about 75 miles from Columbus to the Athens office.
Initial police response found no answer at the doors. Coworkers and a family friend soon arrived, with one caller reporting hearing children inside before spotting a body through a window. Officers re-entered around 10 a.m., confirming the deaths and finding the couple’s two young children — ages 4 and 1 — unharmed in another part of the home. The kids are now with relatives.
Police quickly ruled out murder-suicide, emphasizing the absence of a weapon and other factors. As of January 5, no suspects have been named, no motive disclosed, and no arrests made. Detectives have narrowed requests for public video and photos to a specific three-hour window around the estimated time of the shootings, though details remain guarded.
The tragedy struck just one month shy of the Tepes’ fifth wedding anniversary on January 30. Video from their 2021 COVID-era ceremony, held intimately in the same home, shows a beaming couple toasting guests and sharing handwritten vows — Spencer calling Monique his best friend. Family described their bond as “beautiful, strong, and deeply happy,” centered on travel, laughter, and family.
Spencer, a Mason native and 2007 Mason High School graduate, earned degrees in Spanish and biology from The Ohio State University before his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2017. Fluent in Spanish, he volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and was a passionate Cincinnati Bengals and Ohio State Buckeyes fan. Colleagues mourned him as energetic and generous, with Athens Dental Depot temporarily closing in grief.
Monique, with a background in childhood education, was remembered as a “loving, patient, and joyful mother” who loved baking and brought warmth to everything. The couple’s lives revolved around their children, whom family says were “the center of everything.”
In a statement released January 3 via brother-in-law Rob Misleh, the family expressed devastation: “Our family is devastated by the tragic and senseless loss of Spencer and Monique. They were extraordinary people whose lives were filled with love, joy, and deep connection to others… While no outcome can ever undo this loss, our family is committed to seeing this tragedy fully and fairly brought to justice, and to honoring Spencer and Monique by protecting the future of the children they loved so deeply.”
Neighbors in the revitalizing Weinland Park area — once plagued by higher crime but now seeing gentrification — described the Tepes as friendly but private. One anonymous resident called them “such nice people,” noting the couple’s low-key lifestyle. Others admitted hearing occasional gunshots in the area but nothing unusual that night. The lack of arrests has left residents uneasy, with some rattled by the targeted nature in a quiet block.
Columbus police have deployed crime cameras nearby and are urging tips, including surveillance footage, via a public portal. No community-wide threat has been announced, but the case’s rarity — a seemingly random or personal attack on a professional family — has heightened vigilance.
Memorials have grown outside the home, with flowers, a soccer ball, and notes honoring the couple. Community leaders, including City Council member Tiara Ross representing the area, expressed shock, while Mayor Andrew Ginther’s office deferred comment to the ongoing probe.
Autopsy results from the Franklin County Coroner’s Office are pending, potentially taking weeks. Investigators continue canvassing, reviewing forensics, and exploring the couple’s background for leads.
As the new year dawns, Weinland Park mourns a family whose “perfect” life — filled with professional success, young children, and community ties — ended in unexplained violence. The hunt for answers, and justice, presses on.
