Michigan Mom and Stepdad Charged with Gruesome Murder of Pregnant Daughter, Allegedly Cutting Out Unborn Baby
CADILLAC, Mich. — A northern Michigan community remains reeling after authorities charged a mother and stepfather with the brutal murder of 22-year-old Rebecca Park, who was 38 weeks pregnant, alleging the couple tortured her and surgically removed her unborn child in a remote forest, resulting in both deaths.
Cortney Bartholomew, 40, and her husband Bradly Bartholomew, 47, of Boon Township in Wexford County, were arraigned on December 2, 2025, facing multiple felony charges including first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, torture, conspiracy to commit torture, assault on a pregnant individual causing miscarriage or stillbirth, conspiracy to that assault, unlawful imprisonment, and removal of a dead body.
Prosecutors, with assistance from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office, described the case as premeditated and horrific. Wexford County Prosecutor Johanna Carey told the court the Bartholomews lured Park to their home on November 3, forced her into a vehicle, drove to a wooded area in the Huron-Manistee National Forest, and there stabbed her while attempting to extract the fetus.
“This is, frankly, evil personified,” Carey said during the arraignment, noting the couple allegedly conducted research and planned the act in advance.
Park, a resident of nearby Manton who had been raised by adoptive parents after Cortney gave her up as an infant, was reported missing on November 4 by her sister Kimberly Park. Her body was discovered on November 25 in the national forest, several miles from the Bartholomews’ home. An autopsy revealed she had been subjected to a crude cesarean-like procedure, and the unborn baby boy was missing.
Court documents and affidavits released in early December detailed conflicting confessions from the couple, who pointed fingers at each other during police interrogations.
Cortney initially denied involvement but allegedly changed her story after cell phone data placed her at the crime scene. She claimed Bradly forced Rebecca into the car, stabbed her multiple times, and held a knife to her throat while Cortney performed the extraction. Cortney further alleged the baby was Bradly’s, stating he had confessed paternity to her.
In a separate interview, Bradly reportedly accused Cortney of stabbing Rebecca and removing the infant, claiming she wanted the baby for herself. Both described placing the non-breathing newborn in a cooler before disposing of it in a trash bin, though the infant’s remains have not been recovered as of mid-December 2025.
Judge Corey Wiggins denied bond for both defendants, citing the severity of the allegations. Dozens of supporters, many identifying as “Rebecca’s Voice,” packed the courtroom, with vehicles outside bearing messages demanding justice for Park and her unborn son.
The case initially involved Park’s younger sister, Kimberly Park, 21, and her reported fiancé, Richard Lee Falor, 43, who were arrested shortly after the body was found and charged with lying to police and evidence tampering. Additional affidavits revealed complicated family dynamics, including allegations that Falor had romantic relationships with Rebecca, Kimberly, and Cortney.
Kimberly and Falor were later released on bond, with charges potentially pending further review.
Rebecca Park left behind two young sons from previous relationships, who are now in the care of her adoptive family. Community fundraisers, including GoFundMes and local events, have raised thousands to support the children and cover memorial costs.
Investigators believe Cortney enticed Rebecca to the home by showing a photo of an $18,000 inheritance check from a deceased relative. Park, excited about impending motherhood and planning to live in a motorhome with Falor, arrived willingly but was allegedly restrained soon after.
The Bartholomews’ motive remains unclear in official statements, though family members have speculated about desires for a child. Bradly’s estranged sister told media outlets the couple had struggled to conceive.
Michigan State Police, the FBI, and local agencies continue searching for the baby’s remains while processing evidence from the home and vehicles.
Attorney General Nessel called the loss “unthinkable,” pledging full resources to the prosecution. Each major charge carries a potential life sentence without parole.
As the case heads toward preliminary examinations in early 2026, the small Wexford County community grapples with the shock. Local restaurants and businesses have held vigils, and social media groups dedicated to Park’s memory have grown rapidly.
Rebecca’s adoptive mother, Stephanie Park, spoke to local media about the profound grief, emphasizing Rebecca’s excitement for the new baby and her love for her existing children.
The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone with information to contact the Wexford County Sheriff’s Office or Michigan State Police.
