A dog is miraculously home with her family again, eight years after going missing during Hurricane Harvey.

When the devastating storm made landfall in Louisiana and Texas in 2017, Blue went missing after the fence at her home in Corpus Christi, Texas was destroyed, according to an Instagram post from the Pet Circle Regional Animal Center in Waco. She was 2 years old at the time.

Eight years later, a good Samaritan discovered Blue all alone in a public bathroom at Cameron Park in Waco last week and brought her to Pet Circle, where she was scanned for a microchip.

“What happened next turned out to be an extraordinary story,” the animal shelter wrote.

Pet Circle learned that Blue’s chip was registered to a family 300 miles away. When the organization called the family with the news that their long-lost dog had been found, they were “overwhelmed with emotion.”

“After nearly eight years, the family was thrilled to learn that Blue was safe,” Pet Circle wrote.

The good Samaritan offered to meet Blue’s “furmom” halfway between Waco and Corpus Christi so that the pup could be reunited with her family.

“This heartwarming reunion is a powerful reminder that microchips work,” the shelter noted. “Because Blue was chipped (and her owner’s contact information was up to date), she was able to find her way home after nearly a decade apart.”

Pet Circle shared a series of photos on Instagram, showing Blue riding in the back of a car and her emotional reunion with her furmom.

According to Pet Circle’s website, Waco residents can take stray dogs and cats to any local fire station to be scanned as part of the Fire House to Your House program.

In a similar story, a senior dog, who went missing just days before Hurricane Harvey, was reunited with her family in 2021. Sixteen-year-old Maddie got lost during her owners’ move to New Caney, Texas.

While the family searched for Maddie for months, eventually “you just assume the worst,” owner Rachel Koster told KPCR2.

But then, four years after the hurricane, a volunteer with a local rescue organization found Maddie on the street. Within 24 hours, she was reunited with Koster.

“We are so grateful,” Koster told KPCR2 at the time. “We feel like the hand of God was in it to get our dog back.”
