“He’s not well, and he’s very vulnerable” 😢
The heartbroken mom of missing 25-year-old FIFO worker Bill Carter just issued this chilling warning: her son is in serious danger after vanishing from Perth Airport – smiling in a final breakfast selfie one minute, then ditching his flight and heading to Trigg Beach the next.
Police are expanding the massive search around the beach as fears mount over his mental health crisis. “He’s at risk,” she begs, revealing strange behavior and a recent overseas trip that left him struggling.
Why the airport detour? What’s really going on? The family is pleading for sightings…

Western Australia Police have disclosed alarming new details about the welfare of 25-year-old fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) worker William “Bill” Carter, with his mother warning he is “not well, and he’s very vulnerable” as the search intensifies around Trigg Beach following his mysterious disappearance from Perth Airport.
Jenny O’Byrne, a longtime nurse, made the emotional plea after dropping her son off at Terminal 3 around 12:40 p.m. on December 6, 2025, for a scheduled 2:15 p.m. flight to his mining job in the Pilbara near Karratha. The pair had enjoyed breakfast at a Dome cafe in Kelmscott, even taking a cheerful selfie around 12:20 p.m. – a photo O’Byrne later shared, explaining it was “for his sister.”
But Carter never boarded. Investigations revealed he lingered in the terminal before hailing a taxi around 2:10 p.m., heading north to Trigg Beach. He was last seen near the Trigg Beach Surf Life Saving Club on West Coast Drive about 2:40 p.m., wearing a black t-shirt, shorts, black-and-white sneakers, and carrying only a small backpack.
“There are serious concerns for his outlook on life at the moment,” O’Byrne told reporters. “He’s not well, and he’s very vulnerable and at risk and we just need a lot of people to keep their eyes out.” She described the disappearance as out of character, noting recent “bizarre behaviors” amid what she called a “situational crisis.”
O’Byrne revealed Carter had just returned from a holiday in Zambia visiting his father and had been tapering off anti-anxiety medication. “As a family we’re very supportive… it’s just simply a case of when someone’s not well and they’re going through a situational crisis they don’t see the world as we would see it,” she said.
Carter’s partner, Janae Williamson, confirmed he never reached the mine site, with colleagues describing the missed flight as unusual. Police echoed grave welfare concerns, expanding searches to coastal areas, dunes, and scrub around Trigg Beach, involving volunteers and specialized units.
Authorities urged the public to report any sightings of the slim-built, 174cm man with brown hair and blue eyes, particularly seeking dashcam footage from the airport or West Coast Drive. Social media appeals, including threads on Reddit’s r/perth, gained traction as locals joined the effort.
Carter, originally from Bunbury, attended Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School and Murdoch University before entering the FIFO sector. Friends portrayed him as quiet and affable, with shared photos showing a happy young man in recent times.
The beach detour fueled questions: Why abandon a reliable job for an isolated spot? Speculation centered on mental health, amplified by the demanding FIFO lifestyle – long rosters in remote camps separating workers from support.
Data from the WA Mental Health Commission indicates FIFO workers experience distress at rates significantly higher than average, linked to isolation, shift disruptions, and stigma. Advocates renewed calls for better on-site resources and awareness.
Tragically, on December 16, police located a body near Trigg Beach, believed to be Carter’s. Formal identification was pending, but the death was not treated as suspicious, shifting focus to coronial proceedings.
In the aftermath, O’Byrne addressed an unauthorized GoFundMe by Williamson’s parents, stating the family “would never ask” for donations and urging no contributions.
Tributes highlighted Carter’s positive spirit, with the breakfast selfie a poignant reminder. The case has sparked broader discussions on FIFO mental health support.
