Seth Meyers is uncertain about the future of his late-night show amid a changing TV landscape.

The talk show host recently discussed Late Night with Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast in an episode that was recorded before CBS pulled the plug on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert — a decision that gives Meyers’ words even more weight than when he first uttered them.

When asked if he fears for Late Night‘s long-term viability, Meyers confirmed, “Yeah, I do. I mean, only because it is such a time we’re living in, as far as the entertainment industry.”

The Saturday Night Live alum also agreed with Shepard’s evaluation that his decade-long tenure at Late Night has only existed within “the precarious part” of late-night talk shows’ history, and said that his anxiety about the show’s future no longer relates to his individual performance every night.

“There is this weird thing that I feel like I shifted from fearing that I wouldn’t be good enough, and now my fear is weirdly more outside of my control — which is just at some point, the ecosystem might not support it,” Meyers said. “I guess that’s better than thinking it’s your fault. But it is weird to not feel any control over it.”

Meyers expressed that he feels somewhat at peace with Late Night eventually coming to its conclusion. “This isn’t the best time to be doing what I’m doing, but at least I got in,” he said. “I sometimes think the body of my work matters enough that the world knows Seth Meyers in a way that I’m happy with. I’ve taken my opportunity to build a thing. I know what it means, and I think other people know what it means. So I’m happy about that.”

The comedian later said that he’d “worry” about himself “mental-health-wise” if he didn’t have the regular work routine that Late Night provides, and that he has intentionally tried to diversify his career with stand-up comedy and his podcasts, Family Trips With the Meyers Brothers and The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast.

However, Meyers’ after-hours NBC show remains his favorite project of his present-day career. “I do still love Late Night the most,” he said. “There’s a real family element to it. Part of the wonderful thrill of stand-up is how it’s a real solo effort, yet at the same time, I have a showbiz job that feels like home. It’s the most comfortable place. Like, I have an office that I’ve been in for a long time. They just take such good care of me.”

Meyers also took a moment to praise Stephen Colbert’s tenure on The Late Show. “One of the many reasons to watch Colbert’s show is there’s a real paternal instinct with him,” he said.

Earlier this month, CBS announced that The Late Show would conclude in May 2026, and justified its cancellation as “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.”

Shortly after the announcement, Meyers appeared on The Late Show in a cameo alongside Jimmy Fallon in a segment spoofing the viral Coldplay jumbotron scandal.
