DIOGO JOTA’S wife Rute Cardoso has posted a heartbreaking tribute to her late husband on her daughter’s first birthday.

Jota tragically died aged 28 in a car crash in July with brother Andre Silva after their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout and caught fire.

The former Liverpool star had been driving back to the UK from Portugal for the start of pre-season training before the crash.

His loss stunned the world of football and lead to tributes from the biggest names in the game.

Thousands set their condolences to Rute and their three children, with the shock news coming just 11 days after their wedding.

Now Rute has shared a tribute to Jota after her daughter turned one, sharing a series of pictures of him holding her.

She wrote on Instagram: “A whole year.”

The first picture in her post showed her carrying her daughter with Jota in matching pink outfits, while another saw him cradling her.

She also shared a photo of Jota carrying her out of the hospital on the day of her birth.

Rute received a huge outpouring of support in response to her post.

One wrote: “Wish he was still here to raise his baby girl. We will never ever forget you Diogo.”

Another said: “I teared up while scrolling. Wishing your family nothing but happiness.”

And a third added: “Football means nothing in things like this. I wish you every ounce of happiness wherever you can find it.”

Rute had previously posted images of herself and Jota on the one month anniversary of their wedding day.

The touching post read: “1 month of our ‘until death do us part’.

“For ever, your white girl.”

The pair, who met at school when they were teenagers, had called it “a day we will never forget”.

They had been together for 13 years and had two sons, one called Dinis and another named Duarte, in addition to their daughter.

Liverpool have led the tributes towards their former player after making the decision to retire his No 20 shirt throughout all their teams.

The Reds have already observed a minute’s silence for Jota before their first Premier League game of the season against Bournemouth, with his family in attendance.

While fans have clapped and sung Jota’s song on the 20th minute of everyone Anfield game this season.
