THE stepbrother of Anna Kepner was allegedly allowed to drink on the cruise before the bubbly cheerleader’s death and now faces a psychiatric appointment, his parents argued during an unrelated custody hearing.
The parents of the 16-year-old boy said their son is under investigation by federal authorities for the death of Kepner, who was found dead in her cabin of the Carnival Cruise Line’s Horizon ship on the morning of November 7.
During an unrelated custody hearing on Thursday afternoon, the attorney for Thomas Hudson, the boy’s father, claimed to the court that the teen was “allowed to drink” because the cruise was in international waters.
“The teenagers were given their own room in which to stay,” Scott Smith, Hudson’s attorney said.
“Just a lot of circumstances that showed that the mother in this case was not exercising appropriate supervision over this child or the other child involved.”
In an emergency motion filed on Monday, Hudson blamed his ex-wife’s decision-making for putting his two children’s future in jeopardy.
The estranged ex-couple share three children together, an adult child, the 16-year-old boy, and a 9-year-old.
However, Millicent Athanason, the attorney for Hudson’s ex-wife, Shauntel, dismissed the concerned father’s claims, telling the court that video evidence showed the 16-year-old was not drinking.
“The issue that counsel raised about drinking, there are videotapes on the ship that confirmed that there was absolutely no drinking,” Athanason said.
Shauntel’s attorney revealed to the court that her client’s 16-year-old was hospitalized for an undisclosed reason “immediately after the incident.”
However, the teenager has since been released and is living with one of his mom’s relatives, the attorney added.
Shauntel indicated to the court that her 16-year-old son has a “psychiatrist appointment” in early December.
But as the mother was going to discuss the appointment further, the judge cautioned her not to speak without first seeking advice from her attorney.
The estranged parents are due back in court on December 5 to address child custody arrangements.
Meanwhile at The Grove Church in Titusville, Florida, about 50 minutes east of Orlando, mourners gathered to remember Kepner, a senior at Temple Christian School who was slated to graduate next summer.
Kepner was near the end of her six-day cruise with her family when she was found dead in her cabin.
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed to The U.S. Sun the Horizon disembarked the Port of Miami on November 2 and returned as scheduled on November 8, the day FBI officials boarded the ship to investigate the grisly death.
A housekeeper discovered Kepner’s body wrapped in a blanket, covered in life jackets, and stuffed under a bed after her concerned family said she failed to show up when they gathered for breakfast.
Kepner’s family desperately searched the enormous 1,055-foot vessel for her whereabouts but failed to locate her.
Investigators reportedly reviewed surveillance footage from inside the ship showed Kepner walking back to her room on the evening of November 6, according to the Daily Mail.
That night, Kepner returned to her room early after telling her family at dinner that she was unwell.
The video reportedly showed Kepner entering the room but she never resurfaced.
A short while after Kepner entered her room, her step-brother and other sibling, who were all staying in the space, returned to cabin.
The youngest sibling was reportedly seen leaving the room and wandering around the vessel, taking photos along the way, according to the outlet.
The sibling returned to the room and noticed Kepner was missing.
However, the young child did not have any nefarious thoughts, suspecting Kepner was out late with other family members, and went to sleep, according to the Daily Mail.
Federal investigators are weighing possible criminal charges against Kepner’s 16-year-old step-sibling, who is considered a suspect, according to court documents.
Investigators are probing several possibilities, including whether there was an altercation between Kepner and her step-sibling.
Other theories being investigated are whether Kepner died from a medical episode or overdose, according to ABC News.
