San Jose, California — San Jose police discovered a severely decomposed body inside a vehicle in East San Jose on March 21, 2026, leaving authorities unable to immediately identify the victim and raising concerns about possible foul play.
Officers from the San Jose Police Department responded to a report of suspicious circumstances shortly before 7 a.m. near the intersection of Francis Drive and McKee Road. Upon arrival, they made the grim discovery of human remains in an advanced state of decomposition inside a red, two-door 2010 Nissan Frontier pickup truck.
Due to the condition of the body, it was promptly turned over to the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner for further examination and identification. The extreme decomposition has complicated efforts to determine the victim’s identity and the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
The vehicle is registered to 40-year-old Aldama Refugio Jr., a San Jose resident who was reported missing earlier in 2026 and was last seen in early January of that year. Police have seized the truck as part of the ongoing death investigation and are working to determine whether the remains belong to Refugio.
Investigators have indicated that foul play may be involved, though no official cause of death has been released. The shocking find has unsettled the local community in East San Jose, prompting concerns about safety in the area.
As part of their probe, San Jose police are actively combing the neighborhood for additional evidence, interviewing potential witnesses, and reviewing any surveillance footage or leads that could explain how the body ended up in the truck. Authorities have released photos of both Refugio and the associated red Nissan Frontier in hopes of generating tips from the public.
