A tragedy was narrowly averted at another Lake Tahoe Resort after two skiers rescued a man who was buried in the deep snow.
Wild video shows two skiers on Feb. 18 hit the slopes at the Palisades Tahoe resort in California and spotting two skis sticking up in the air with only the bottom of a hand holding on to a pole.
“For whatever reason we stopped and happened to just see tips of the skis in the whiteout and luckily we did,” said Carson Schmidt, the person who posted the video.
Schmidt and a fellow skier had just finished a run when one of them noticed that just off in the distance, something was not right.
“Hey are they good?” one of the skiers asked his buddy who was much closer to the buried person in all the powder.
The two men then quickly ski over to the man under the snow and frantically start digging trying to get to them.
The man who’s buried doesn’t move an inch as the two skiers continue moving mounds and mounds of powder of the affected skier.
At one point, a muffled sound can be overheard.
“We got you,” one of the skiers said after getting to the buried skier who asked the man if he was okay.
The skier assured them he was and the two skiers continued to dig the person out and rescue them.
“Just want it to be a reminder to ski safe and ski with a buddy,” Schmidt said in the post on social media. “Doesn’t have to be an avalanche or a tree well to get buried when it’s that deep.”
It is unclear what happened that led to the skier being buried. Calls to the Palisades Tahoe Resort were not returned immediately to The Post.
The scary moment at the resort came just one day after tragedy struck in the region near Castle Peak on when a massive avalanche killed 9 backcountry skiers.
The original group of 15 had set out on Tuesday to return from a 3 day trip in hopes of escaping the winter storm that pummeled the area.
All nine victims, including six “supermoms” who were clients of Blackbird Mountain Guides, were recovered from the mountain over the weekend.
“There are no words that truly capture the significance of this loss and our hearts mourn alongside the families of those affected by this catastrophic event,” said Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon said at the press conference about the recovery. “The weight of this event is felt across many families, friends, and colleagues, and we stand together with them during this difficult time.”
