In a devastating turn of events, the U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its massive search for Randall “Randy” Spivey, 57, a prominent Fort Myers attorney, and his nephew Brandon Billmaier, 33, also a lawyer, who vanished during a routine deep-sea fishing trip off the Southwest Florida coast. The two men, described as experienced boaters and deeply close – with Billmaier viewing his uncle as a father figure – set out early on Friday, December 19, 2025, aboard Spivey’s 42-foot Freeman boat named “Unstopp-A-Bull” from their home dock in Iona, near Fort Myers.
They were expected back by sunset, but when they failed to return, frantic family members alerted authorities around 9 p.m. The alarm escalated when the Coast Guard located the vessel early Saturday, approximately 70 miles offshore near Naples and Marco Island. Shockingly, the boat was found drifting upright, engines running, with no one on board. Fishing gear was out, and crucially, two life jackets were missing, sparking initial hope that the men might have donned them and could still be afloat.
What followed was one of the largest search operations in Southwest Florida history. Over three full days, Coast Guard helicopters, planes, and boats scoured more than 6,700 square miles of the Gulf of Mexico – an area roughly the size of Connecticut. Dozens of volunteer boaters from across the region joined the effort, coordinating through family networks and social media. Weather conditions were moderate, with winds around 10 mph and 3-foot seas, but time was the enemy.
Family members clung to optimism amid the agony. Randy’s wife, Tricia Spivey, was seen breaking down in tears at the scene, pleading desperately for their safe return: “Please, please find them. I just need him back.” Brandon’s wife, Deborah Billmaier, shared heartfelt posts, expressing heartbreak while rallying the community. Friends described the pair as pillars of their worlds – Randy a community leader and safety-conscious boater with decades of experience, and Brandon a newlywed who had recently followed his uncle into the legal profession.
By sunset on Monday, December 22, the Coast Guard made the agonizing decision to suspend active search and rescue operations. Officials briefed the families privately, explaining that exhaustive efforts in the most probable areas left them confident the men would have been located if still on the surface. In a statement, the family acknowledged the painful reality: “While this is heartbreaking, Brandon and Randy would never want anyone else to put their life in danger.”
The case has now shifted gears, with the FBI stepping in to lead the investigation, assisting local agencies in exploring any potential foul play or other unexplained factors. Both men were accomplished attorneys – Spivey founding his own firm and Billmaier working at a Boca Raton practice – adding layers of intrigue to their sudden disappearance.
As Christmas Eve approaches, the families remain in limbo, grateful for the outpouring of support but shattered by loss. Volunteers and loved ones continue sharing updates online, holding onto faint hope for a miracle. The Gulf’s vastness has claimed another mystery, leaving a community in mourning and questions unanswered: What caused two skilled fishermen to vanish without a trace?
