A 10-year-old girl is recovering after a dog attack left her seriously injured.

Mina Bestun was hospitalized after being attacked by a dog while on her way home from school on Roseneath Road in Bolton, England, on Wednesday, Feb. 4, according to The Bolton News, the BBC and SWNS, which cited Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

A GMP spokesperson told the outlets that officers were dispatched to the scene around 3:30 p.m. local time, adding, “Emergency services attended, and a 10-year-old girl was taken to [the] hospital with serious injuries, believed to be life-changing.”

PEOPLE reached out to GMP for comment about the incident on Saturday, Feb. 7, but did not receive an immediate response.

Authorities said, per the outlets, that armed response vehicles and GMP’s dog unit were deployed to the scene and two dogs were “detained.” The GMP confirmed to the BBC that the dog that attacked is believed to have been an “XL bully type” — which have been banned in England since 2024.

The owners of the dogs — identified as a 28-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman — were arrested on suspicion of “possessing a dog dangerously out of control.”

Police said they are still investigating the incident.

The girl, who was still been in the hospital as of Feb. 5, told The Bolton News and SWNS, “I was just going back home, and then I think it was a bulldog, a big dog, and it bit me two houses down from mine.

“I just want to say that make sure you take care of your dog, keep them inside the house,” she added.

Bestun’s mother, Soma Mohammed, told The Bolton News that some of their neighbors witnessed the incident and tried to step in to distract the dog in order to help her daughter escape.

“When she was coming back from school, the neighbors said they saw a dog around here. My daughter was coming down the street and the dog got her,” Mohammed recalled to the outlet.

She added that her daughter had 13 tooth marks on her skin, including four which were deep, and her daughter was put on antibiotics in order to fight off any bacteria from the dog’s bites.

The 10-year-old’s father, Bestun Ibrahim, shared with The Bolton News on Feb. 5 that his daughter was set to undergo another operation for her arm.

“It was only her arm, if it was her face or her stomach, what would I do then? She was very lucky,” he told the BBC.

“Please, if you have a dog keep an eye on it,” he added. “This happened to my little daughter, I don’t want it to happen again to another kid.”
