In the quiet Mill Creek neighborhood of Berkeley Township, New Jersey, the early morning of March 10, 2026, shattered forever by gunfire that echoed through the predawn darkness. What began as a domestic dispute escalated into one of the most harrowing family tragedies in recent memory.
Authorities identified the perpetrator as 37-year-old Vaughn Stewart of Maplewood. According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Stewart forced entry into the Fairwood Drive home where his estranged wife, 38-year-old Deonna Stewart, was staying with her parents, Allan Russell, 61, and Michelle Russell, 60. The couple had been living separately, and tensions had reached a breaking point.
Stewart first shot and killed Allan and Michelle Russell inside the residence. Deonna fled in terror, running down the street in a desperate bid for safety. Neighbors’ security footage captured her frantic cries piercing the night. Stewart pursued her relentlessly, firing multiple shots that struck and killed her about 50 yards from the home. Shell casings littered the area as evidence of the chase.
Returning to the house, Stewart turned the weapon on himself, suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to Community Medical Center in Toms River but was pronounced dead shortly after. Inside the home, three minor children—shared by Vaughn and Deonna—were found unharmed amid the chaos. They have since been placed under the care of the Department of Child Protection and Permanency.
The motive appears rooted in longstanding marital strife and separation. No elaborate written confession or painted message has surfaced publicly, but the sheer brutality of the act has stunned the community. Investigators pieced together the sequence through witness accounts, forensic evidence, and video footage that documented Deonna’s final moments of desperation.
This senseless violence has left the three children without parents or grandparents, facing unimaginable trauma. Community members have expressed profound sorrow, with many calling for greater awareness of domestic violence warning signs and support for families in crisis. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office continues to investigate, though the case is considered closed due to the perpetrator’s death.
Such incidents highlight the devastating consequences of unresolved conflicts, particularly when firearms are involved. Neighbors described the area as peaceful before the incident, making the eruption of violence all the more shocking. As the investigation wraps, focus shifts to the surviving children and ensuring they receive the care and counseling needed to navigate their loss.
