In the early hours of April 5, 2026, a violent storm unleashed chaos across Tucumán, Argentina. What began as a joyful night at a wedding celebration in Tafí Viejo ended in heartbreaking tragedy for one young family.
Mariano Robles, 28, and his wife Solana Albornoz, 32, had spent the evening dancing and laughing with friends at the SMATA complex. Like many parents craving a rare night out, they left their two small children — five-year-old Roma and nine-month-old Nicanor — in the care of a nanny before heading to the party. They promised to return soon.
As heavy rain pounded the region, the couple decided to pull over in their white Nissan Versa and wait for the downpour to ease. In what would be their final message, they texted the nanny that they were safe inside the car and would head home once the water receded. That text was the last anyone heard from them.
Hours later, worried relatives launched a desperate search. Mariano’s brother reported the couple missing early Sunday morning. Rescue teams eventually located the overturned vehicle in an irrigation canal near the Nueva Italia neighborhood, about 400 meters from Route 9. Inside, emergency workers found Mariano and Solana locked in a tight embrace, their bodies swept away by the sudden flash flood that had dragged the car more than 250 meters before it plunged into the ditch.
The image of the couple holding each other in their final moments has deeply moved the community. Friends and family described Mariano and Solana as devoted parents who “lived for their children.” Mariano worked as a civil servant at the Tucumán Government Palace, while Solana was employed at the state-run Caja Popular de Ahorros. They were known as responsible, hard-working people who prioritized family above all else.
Back at home, the reality is devastating. The two young children still do not fully understand what has happened. The five-year-old continues to cry inconsolably, asking repeatedly why Mommy and Daddy have not come home yet. The baby, too young to comprehend the loss, senses the heavy sadness filling the house as relatives gather in shock and grief.
This tragedy is one of several caused by the severe storm that hit Tucumán that weekend, claiming at least three lives in total. Yet for those closest to Mariano and Solana, the pain feels uniquely personal. Relatives recall how the couple rarely went out without their children, making this one night away all the more poignant — and cruel.
Neighbors and colleagues have expressed profound sorrow, remembering the young parents’ warmth and dedication. In a province still reeling from the floods, the story of this loving couple dying together while trying to return to their babies has touched hearts far beyond Tucumán.
As investigations continue into the exact circumstances of the flash flood, the focus now turns to the orphaned children. Extended family and friends are rallying to support the little ones who, in a single night, lost both parents. The five-year-old’s endless tears and innocent questions serve as a painful reminder of how quickly life can change — and how fragile happiness can be in the face of nature’s fury.
