David Muir has interrupted his ABC World News Tonight show to deliver “heartbreaking” news about a two-year-old boy.

On Friday, David revealed that a child had been swept away in a car, alongside his father, in Barstow, California. This comes as torrential rain hit the Golden State, and while the father has been rescued, the two-year-old was sadly found deceased.

Sharing footage of the car being swept away in the flood waters, reporter Melissa Adan explained Xavier Padilla Aguilera was swept away as he traveled in a white Sedan with his father.

Xavier’s aunt, Leeanna Kay, took to social media to inform friends and family that the search for her nephew continued as of Friday morning and described him as “the sweetest baby.”

“My nephew is 2!” she said. “His name is Xavier, he is super small, and he is missing from the car in the river. He has brown hair and eyes, and he’s a lighter skin tone. Please help us find him.”

One woman, Denise Romo, could only watch on as a mud slide went past her, taking with it anything that stood in its path. Speaking to ABC, she said, “It kind of sounded like an earthquake was coming. When I opened my kitchen window, I just saw the first wave of mud, and it already had trees, mailboxes, and a bunch of debris.”

North of the area in Forest Falls, mud rose nearly as high as people’s bedroom windows, with frontloaders “fearlessly” scooping the debris up. Residents were also left having to climb over boulders and logs to make it home.

“A wall of mud came flowing down, and you can see as many as eight homes were damaged. Some may have been destroyed, and they may not be reparable,” said Scott Reiffe, a KABC-TV reporter.

The “monsoon rain” which caused the floods was said to have been “supercharged” by Tropical Storm Mario, with the waters plowing through towns in New Mexico, as well as California.

World News Tonight viewers shared their upset over the story, with one person writing on Instagram, “Poor kid had no chance,” and another adding, “Thoughts and prayers.”
