Loyola University Chicago’s student newspaper is facing backlash for apologizing for its coverage of freshman Sheridan Gorman’s murder — because editors labeled the alleged murderer an “illegal immigrant.”
The Loyola Phoenix originally reported — accurately — on accused killer Jose Medina-Medina‘s status as an illegal alien after he was charged on Monday with the execution of 18-year-old Gorman.
“Immigrant man charged in murder of Sheridan Gorman, DHS involved,” the student paper’s headline originally read, referring to Venezuelan national Medina-Medina, 25, as an “illegal immigrant.”
But the Phoenix later edited its story to describe Medina-Medina as a “Rogers Park Resident,” in reference to the Chicago neighborhood where Loyola’s main campus is located — and where Gorman was walking with friends when she was shot dead early Thursday.
“That headline didn’t reflect the most important elements in the story, and it was taken down minutes later to prevent any further harm to affected community members,” the newspaper said in a lengthy editor’s note on the article.
“Additionally, in the body of the original post, we described the man who was charged as an ‘illegal immigrant,’ using language provided by the Department of Homeland Security. That language does not align with Associated Press style, nor does it align with the values of this newspaper,” the editor’s note continued.
“No human’s existence is illegal, and we quickly changed our wording to reflect that,” the student newspaper wrote, despite noting in its article that Medina-Medina “was living in the United States illegally,” according to the DHS.
The college newspaper’s U-turn has sparked a furious response from many.
“If I were her parents this would send me over the edge!” one X user wrote.
“No dystopian could conjure the college-aged left as they are now. They surpass parody,” wrote another X user.
“Apologizing to murderers. How typically woke,” added a third X user.
The Loyola Phoenix did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
Woke Dems in Chicago have been accused of rushing to excuse Gorman’s alleged killer of culpability for the murder.
Chicago Alderwoman Maria Hadden was slammed for suggesting on Monday that Gorman was “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” even claiming outrageously that Medina-Medina may have been “startled” when he allegedly shot the teenager.
Gorman was reportedly masked at the time when he allegedly approached her and her friends and shot her in the head while the group walked along the Chicago lakefront.
Hadden, a progressive ally of Chicago’s mayor, apologized on Tuesday evening, before blaming the “conservative media” for “misconstruing” her words.
On Tuesday, Mayor Brandon Johnson refused to apologize to Gorman’s parents for promoting sanctuary city policies, which allowed Medina-Medina to be in Chicago at the time.
The White House has blamed border and sanctuary policies in sanctuary cities such as Chicago for the murder of Gorman.
Medina-Medina was allegedly previously stopped at the border in 2023 but released twice under President Joe Biden’s administration.
“A preventable tragedy. Sheridan Gorman was murdered by an illegal alien released into the U.S. in 2023 under the Biden administration — a direct result of failed border & sanctuary city policies,” the White House said in a post on X on Tuesday.
“The Trump Admin is working hard to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Prayers are with her loved ones,” the post concluded.
Gorman’s parents, from Yorktown Heights, New York, paid a heart-rending tribute to their daughter on Sunday.
Grieving mother Jessica Gorman vowed to get “justice” for her daughter as she spoke to The Post on Monday.
