The baffling disappearance of two Florida attorneys, Randall “Randy” Spivey, 57, and his nephew Brandon Billmaier, 33, has taken a dramatic turn with revelations that a crucial piece of evidence—a recorded conversation between the pair—shows signs of editing or manipulation. Authorities examining the material discovered inconsistencies suggesting the dialogue may have been altered, casting doubt on its authenticity and fueling speculation about what truly happened during their ill-fated fishing trip.
Spivey, a prominent personal injury lawyer in Fort Myers, and Billmaier, a trial attorney at the Shiner Law Group in Boca Raton, vanished on December 19, 2025, after setting out early that morning on Spivey’s 42-foot Freeman catamaran, named “Unstopp-A-Bull.” The experienced boaters were heading into the Gulf of Mexico for a routine deep-sea fishing excursion, approximately 70-100 miles offshore. Family members grew concerned when they failed to return by evening, prompting an immediate alert.
The U.S. Coast Guard launched an extensive search, locating the vessel adrift and upright the following day, still in gear but eerily empty. Notably, two life jackets were missing, leading initial theories that the men might have entered the water intentionally or accidentally. Despite exhaustive efforts involving dozens of boats, aircraft, and volunteers from across the Southeast, no trace of Spivey or Billmaier was found. The Coast Guard suspended active search operations on December 22, citing the massive resources deployed and high confidence that the men would have been spotted if afloat on the surface.
What makes this case particularly intriguing is the emergence of the conversation evidence. Astonishingly, this potentially pivotal recording was provided to investigators by a colleague of the two missing men—someone who worked closely with them in the legal field. The submission came three days after the disappearance, raising eyebrows about the delay and the source. Forensic analysis by police reportedly revealed signs of tampering, such as abrupt cuts, inconsistencies in audio quality, or mismatched timelines, suggesting the chat may have been edited to convey a specific narrative.
This development has intensified scrutiny, with the FBI stepping in to lead the investigation as a missing persons case. While initial assessments pointed toward a tragic boating accident—possibly one man falling overboard and the other attempting a rescue—the tampered evidence introduces questions of motive and cover-up. Both men were respected in their profession; Spivey was known for his decades of advocacy for injured clients, while Billmaier, recently married, followed in his uncle’s footsteps with ambition to join the family firm.
Families have expressed heartbreak but supported the search suspension, emphasizing the men’s love for safety and the sea. Billmaier’s wife, Deborah, shared poignant memories of her husband’s passion for fishing, finding some solace in that. Yet, with this new evidence under review, hope lingers that answers—and perhaps the men themselves—could still emerge.
As the probe continues into 2026, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. The case remains open, blending tragedy with mystery in one of Florida’s most perplexing vanishings.
