In a heartbreaking turn that has stunned Australia’s fishing community, authorities have recovered a body believed to be that of 44-year-old Ashley “Ash” Haigh, the experienced Gold Coast game fisherman who vanished during what was meant to be a routine day trip on February 5, 2026.
Haigh, a devoted husband and father known for his passion for big-game fishing, set out early that Thursday morning from The Spit on the Gold Coast in his black half-cabin vessel, The Grey Ghost. He never returned to Runaway Bay Marina as planned. By evening, alarm bells rang when the boat failed to appear, prompting his family to report him missing around 7 p.m.
The following morning, around 2 a.m. on February 6, search teams made a chilling discovery: the unmanned boat drifting approximately 46km offshore near Burleigh Heads. No one was aboard, and one life jacket was notably absent. An inactive Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) registered to Haigh was later located about 25km off Ballina, further south, but still no trace of the man himself.
A massive operation ensued, involving Queensland Police, marine rescue units, air patrols, and volunteers from the tight-knit fishing network. Teams scoured over 1,800 square nautical miles of ocean, from the Gold Coast Seaway south toward Yamba, in a desperate bid to find signs of life. Friends described Haigh as an incredibly skilled and respected angler who loved chasing marlin and shared his adventures with family and mates. His sister called him a “very loved” family man whose absence left a gaping hole in their lives.
As days passed without breakthroughs, the search shifted from rescue to recovery mode. Hopes for a miracle dwindled with each passing tide. Then came the devastating confirmation: a body was located roughly 40km west of the boat’s last known position. While formal identification is pending, officials and those close to the case believe it to be Haigh, bringing the worst fears to reality.
The incident underscores the unforgiving dangers of the sea, even for seasoned professionals. Sudden weather changes, equipment failures, or encounters with powerful game fish like marlin—some weighing hundreds of kilograms—can turn a peaceful outing into disaster in moments. Haigh’s boat was found intact, fueling speculation about what exactly happened in those isolated waters.
The Gold Coast and broader fishing community are in mourning. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Haigh’s wife and children during this unimaginable time. Tributes pour in online, remembering him as a generous friend, dedicated dad, and one of the best in the game.
This loss serves as a somber reminder of the risks inherent in pursuing a livelihood or passion on the open ocean. As investigations continue to piece together the final hours, the focus now turns to honoring a life cut tragically short and supporting those left behind.
