A Brazilian social media influencer died after contracting a mystery illness just days after celebrating her 26th birthday with pals — and less than a month after she got engaged to her longtime boyfriend.
Yasmim Ângela Feitosa de Souza died on Nov. 10, two days after her birthday.
Feitosa de Souza’s mother told Brazilian news outlet g1 that the influencer fell ill after splitting a bottle of whiskey with two of her friends on her birthday and died at her home in Petrolina.
“They drank on Monday night, and then yesterday, my daughter’s boyfriend woke up feeling unwell. My daughter, however, was happy all day, playing with everyone. She went to the market with me, we did our grocery shopping, we had lunch out. And it was at night that she started feeling unwell. And then I couldn’t save my daughter,” her heartbroken parent told the outlet.
It’s unclear if the alcohol the trio consumed was homemade or otherwise tainted. Feitosa de Souza’s mother told the outlet that they consumed roughly one and a half liters in total and that the remainder of the drink is under analysis.
The University Hospital of Univasf, located in Petrolina, confirmed that they received a patient on Nov. 12 with reports of methanol poisoning. It’s unclear if either of Feitosa de Souza’s friends also got sick after the birthday bash.
In early October, three people were killed and more than 200 were sickened in a mass methanol poisoning outbreak stemming from bootleg liquor sold throughout Brazil, with a majority connecting back to bars in São Paulo.
Feitosa de Souza was best known for her lifestyle content, with her cooking videos often garnering the most views.
She also featured comedy skits in collaboration with other influencers and scores of fashion-forward, bikini-clad pictures, with many also featuring her longtime boyfriend.
She boasted 23,000 followers on Instagram. Her final post, shared on Nov. 5, showed a screen recording of messages between her and her boyfriend. The two had recently gotten engaged.
“My love, today my heart overflows with gratitude and joy. This ring is not just a symbol; it’s a reflection of everything we’ve lived through, the love we’ve built, and the dreams we’re realizing together,” she gushed in an Oct. 18 post showing a box with a diamond ring.
“Every detail of this moment made me feel how blessed I am to have you by my side—the man who makes me smile, who embraces me, who chooses me every day. Thank you for transforming what was just a dream into reality. This ring is more than a gift; it’s proof of our love, our story, and our “forever.” I love you infinitely.”
Feitosa de Souza will be laid to rest at a cemetery near her home on Nov. 13, g1 reported.
