The streets of East Williamsburg, usually bustling with the midday energy of families and commuters, have been transformed into a site of unimaginable mourning. A heart-shattering video circulating on social media has captured the “exact moment” a mother’s world collapsed, after her 7-month-old daughter, Kaori Patterson-Moore, was struck and killed by a stray bullet in broad daylight.
The Fatal Moment
The tragedy unfolded at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday near the intersection of Moore and Humboldt Streets. According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Kaori was being pushed in her stroller when two individuals on a moped approached the corner.
The passenger on the back of the vehicle allegedly pulled out a firearm and discharged multiple rounds toward a group of people. While the gunmen were purportedly targeting rival gang members, one “cowardly” shot struck the infant directly in the head.
A video, which has since gone viral on X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, captures the harrowing screams of Kaori’s mother, Lianna Charles-Moore. “I can’t get her back. She’s gone, and I can’t ever see her again,” she sobbed in a later interview with CBS News New York. The footage shows the chaotic aftermath as the infant’s father desperately grabbed the child and ran toward NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, where she was tragically pronounced dead at 1:46 p.m.
A Community in Rage
The digital landscape has exploded with reactions. On Reddit’s r/ncy and r/brooklyn communities, users are expressing a mix of profound sadness and white-hot anger.
“I watched that video and I haven’t been able to stop crying. This wasn’t a ‘crossfire’—this was an execution of innocence,” wrote one user in a thread that has garnered thousands of upvotes.
On X, Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the city, stating, “A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant. We cannot accept this violence as normal.” Despite the political rhetoric, the sentiment on the ground remains cynical, with many residents demanding immediate crackdowns on moped-related crimes and gang activity.
The Investigation: A Manhunt Underway
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the alleged shooter as 21-year-old Amari Green. According to police reports, the suspects crashed their moped into an oncoming car just two blocks away from the scene while attempting to flee.
Suspect 1: Amari Green, 21, is currently sought by police and is expected to face charges of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Suspect 2: One person of interest is currently in custody on unrelated charges, but the investigation into their role as the driver continues.
“This is a tragedy that truly shocks the conscience,” Commissioner Tisch stated during a press briefing. “There were multiple children and strollers in that immediate area. It is a miracle more lives weren’t lost, but that is no comfort to this family.”
A Legacy of Forgiveness Amidst Pain
In a move that has stunned many followers of the story, Kaori’s grandparents—both of whom serve as local pastors—have publicly spoken about forgiveness. “This is my little baby angel. She was innocent,” grandmother Linda Oyinkoinyan told reporters. “Why would someone point a gun at a stroller?” Despite the horror, the family has leaned on their faith, even as the community calls for the harshest possible penalties for the perpetrators.
Future Outlook
As Brooklyn prepares for a vigil in Kaori’s honor, the pressure on City Hall to address the “moped-gunman” trend is reaching a breaking point. The NYPD has announced a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of Amari Green.
For now, the image of a pink stroller marked by police tape serves as a grim reminder of a city struggling to protect its most vulnerable. As one neighbor put it, “Today, every mother in Brooklyn is crying.”
