Released CCTV footage has captured the horrifying moments before the Air Canada flight collided with a fire truck at LaGuardia airport in New York.
Late on Sunday evening as the Air Canada Express Flight 8646 touched down on its flight from Montreal, it crashed into a fire truck on the runway, sadly killing the two pilots and injuring more than a dozen passengers.
The flight attendant who was sat with the pilots was also ejected from the flight as she sat on the jump seat in the cockpit but is thankfully set to recover from her injuries.
Although audio from the traffic control room had already painted a picture of how the accident occurred, newly released CCTV footage has now shown exactly how the crash happened.
You can watch the moments before the crash below:
A Port Authority spokesperson said in a statement: “The pilot and co-pilot of the Jazz Aviation flight were pronounced deceased.
“Additionally, 41 people were transported to the hospital, 39 people on the aircraft and two ARFF officers.
“The National Transportation Safety Board is on site. The Port Authority Police Department is working closely with our airline partners as well as federal authorities, and will provide additional updates as more details become available.”
Air Canada said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of two Jazz employees, and our deepest condolences go out to the entire Jazz community and their families.”
The plane was carrying 76 people and 41 of those were taken to hospital with injuries following Sunday’s incident, with latest figures suggesting that just nine of those are still receiving treatment with the other 32 released.
Bryan Bedford, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration, confirmed at yesterday’s press conference that the fire truck was responding to another plane’s failed take off when it was hit, with the crew also released from hospital.
US transport secretary Sean Duffy said: “I’m not saying the crash would have been prevented if we had all the equipment deployed, but it’s important if we care about air travel safety, we care about having a brand new air traffic control system, the best in the world, with the best equipment, virtually all of it developed here in America.”
Sadly, it is only the latest in a long list of aviation accidents in America in recent times, with last year seeing an American Airlines flight collide with a US army helicopter in mid-air, resulting in a total loss of life.
New York mayor Zohran Mamdani has since praised the emergency crews who ‘handled a chaotic scene with professionalism and poise’ while also suggesting that they ‘will not rest until the conclusion of the investigation’.
