Tragedy struck during spring break in Barcelona as the body of James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old junior at the University of Alabama, was recovered from the Mediterranean Sea near the spot where he vanished earlier this week.

Spanish authorities, specifically the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police), confirmed the identification of the body found Thursday afternoon in approximately 13-foot-deep waters off Somorrostro Beach, just steps from the popular Shôko nightclub in the Port Olímpic area. A Barcelona police spokesperson told media outlets that initial evidence strongly suggests the death was accidental, with no signs of foul play involved.

Gracey, a native of Elmhurst, Illinois, had arrived in Barcelona on Monday to visit friends studying abroad. He was last captured on surveillance footage leaving Shôko nightclub around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17. He became separated from his group inside the renowned beachfront venue and never returned to the Airbnb accommodation, located about two miles away in the Ronda de Sant Pere neighborhood.

Friends reported him missing after he failed to appear at the rental property. In the ensuing search, authorities recovered Gracey’s phone and his wallet floating in the waters off Somorrostro Beach on Wednesday, items that helped narrow the focus to the coastal area near the club.

During the postmortem examination conducted by forensic pathologists, officials discovered unusual marks on Gracey’s wrists—irregular abrasions and bruising that appeared inconsistent with typical drowning injuries or accidental submersion. These findings prompted a more thorough review of the circumstances, though police have maintained that the overall evidence continues to point toward a tragic accident, possibly involving intoxication, disorientation near the water, or an unintended fall into the sea after leaving the club. The exact cause of death remains under investigation pending full autopsy results and toxicology reports.

One of Gracey’s fraternity brothers from Theta Chi at the University of Alabama, Cavin McLay, who was present that night, expressed the group’s devastation. “Unfortunately, he was separated from the rest of the group later into the night, and that was the last time we’ve heard from him,” McLay said. He described Gracey as a mentor who guided others in their faith journey, adding that the group was struggling to stay hopeful while fearing the worst.

The Gracey family, who traveled to Barcelona to aid in the search, released a heartfelt statement expressing profound grief. “Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy’s body has been recovered in Barcelona. Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” they said. They extended gratitude for global support, prayers, and assistance from local authorities and the U.S. Consulate, while requesting privacy to grieve together.

The University of Alabama also issued a statement, noting that the loss reverberated across campus. “Jimmy’s loss is deeply felt across our campus. Our condolences are with the Gracey family during this devastating time,” university officials said, emphasizing available counseling resources for students and community members affected.

Gracey was remembered by his parents as a “kind, responsible, and devoted son and brother,” and by friends as a person of strong character who was always there for others.
