It’s fair to say David Muir stressed out his ABC World News Tonight viewers during Wednesday’s show.
The 51-year-old took to the air for Wednesday’s installment of the long-running news show before interrupting it for a breaking news announcement about the 7.3-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Alaska earlier that day.
Addressing viewers, David began, “An earthquake that struck late today, right off Alaska, 7.3 magnitude quake right off the coast, triggering a tsunami warning across some 700 miles. In fact, families were warned to move to higher ground. Let’s get right to ABC News. Kayna Whitworth, with the images coming in and Kayna, what do we know so far?”
The show then cut to Kayna, who was reporting live from outside the studio. She declared, “Yeah, David, that 700 miles you mentioned there runs along the southern coast of Alaska, as well as the Alaskan Peninsula.

“And this happened after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake was recorded off the coast. It actually struck about 50 miles south of Sand Point. So people there, David, are bracing for large waves, residents and visitors racing to higher ground or moving further inland, if they can.
“Tremors from the earthquake were felt throughout the region also alarms were sounding in some of those larger communities like Kodiak but also David here mentioning that the warning was downgraded to an advisory and then that was canceled.”
David thanked Kayna for her report before moving onto other pressing news stories from the day.
A clip of the breaking news segment was shared to ABC World News Tonight’s official Instagram account, where fans expressed their concerns.
The account added some further details in the caption, sharing, “A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sand Point, Alaska, triggering the NWS to issue a tsunami warning. The warning was later downgraded to an advisory, according to the agency, but was later canceled. @KaynaWhitworth has the latest.”
“Wicked weather. May God help us,” wrote one seemingly worried fan as another speculated, “Something major is coming, fault line in California is moving, be ready everybody, prayers for everybody.”
A third pointed out, “Iceland erupted today as well. The ring of fire has been very active and we can expect to see some movement through August for sure.”
While a fourth fan dramatically commented, “End of the world, is all that comes to mind,” and a fifth said, “Praying for Alaska,” followed by a love heart emoji.
And a sixth urged, “If you know where you’re going, you will never worry about things like this. Why worry about “WHAT IF”? Just a Waste of time.”
