Darius Slay, the six-time Pro Bowl cornerback nicknamed “Big Play Slay,” has officially retired from the NFL after a distinguished 13-season career. The 35-year-old announced his decision on Monday via an emotional Instagram post, accompanied by a highlight reel of his standout moments on the field.
In his heartfelt message, Slay reflected on his lifelong passion for the game. “Dear football,” he wrote, “I wanna thank you for all you’ve done for me. I’ve been blessed to play the game I loved since I was 5yrs old for an amazing 13yrs at the highest level. Football was my peace, my joy, my everything. This game put me in a position to help take care of my family and loved ones and I’m forever grateful.”
He acknowledged the difficulty of stepping away but expressed optimism about the future: “It’s hard to say goodbye, but God has a new chapter for me and I’m ready to turn the page and start my new journey. To all my BigPlay fans, I will always appreciate the love and support y’all have given to me. I couldn’t have done it without you. Just A kid from Brunswick, GA with BIG dreams…✊🏽 BigPlay on and off the field! We Out✌🏾”
Slay’s retirement comes after a turbulent and ultimately brief final chapter in his professional journey. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the 2025 season, seeking a fresh start following his release from the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2025 (after the Eagles opted out of his contract following their Super Bowl victory). In Pittsburgh, Slay appeared in 10 games, starting nine, but struggled with performance consistency—posting a career-low 58.6 Pro Football Focus coverage grade—and was ultimately released by the team in early December 2025 amid roster adjustments and questions about his fit in the defensive scheme.
The Buffalo Bills quickly claimed him off waivers, viewing the veteran as a potential boost to their secondary during a playoff push. However, Slay chose not to report to the team, citing reluctance to relocate again and personal uncertainty about continuing to play. He described the situation as catching him “at a bad time,” emphasizing it wasn’t a poor fit with Buffalo but rather a moment of reflection on his future. He remained on the reserve/retired list to close out the 2025 campaign without suiting up, signaling the beginning of the end for his playing days.
This challenging offseason transition likely contributed significantly to his decision to retire. After more than a decade of high-level competition, frequent moves, and the physical toll of the position, Slay appeared ready to prioritize family, faith, and new opportunities over another potential comeback—especially as he had indicated he would only consider returning to the Eagles, a scenario that never materialized.
Slay entered the league in 2013 as a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions out of Mississippi State. He quickly established himself as one of the NFC’s top cornerbacks, earning three Pro Bowl selections during seven seasons in Detroit, where he started 94 games and recorded 19 interceptions.
In 2020, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he flourished for five seasons. Slay added three more Pro Bowl nods and helped anchor a defense that peaked with a dominant performance in Super Bowl LIX following the 2024 season. In that title game, the Eagles defeated Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22, with Slay contributing key tackles in a victory that capped his Eagles tenure on a championship high.
Across his career, Slay played in 187 games, tallied 28 interceptions (three returned for touchdowns), and solidified his reputation as a playmaker capable of game-changing moments. From a small-town kid in Brunswick, Georgia, to a Super Bowl champion and one of the most respected defensive backs of his era, Slay’s journey exemplifies perseverance, talent, and gratitude for the sport that shaped his life.
As he turns the page, the NFL bids farewell to “Big Play Slay”—a player whose highlight-reel moments and leadership will be remembered fondly by fans across Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and beyond.
