Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has opted to give his players Christmas Day off in 2025, a departure from recent traditions at the club due to the Premier League’s lighter festive schedule. The decision allows the squad to spend the holiday with families ahead of their next match on December 27 against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

Captain Virgil van Dijk expressed appreciation for the gesture following Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on December 20, which extended the team’s unbeaten run to six games. “We have Christmas Day off which is very nice of the staff,” van Dijk told reporters. “It’s a nice change. I’ll be at home on Christmas Eve too and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Van Dijk, who has been with Liverpool since 2018, noted the rarity of the break: “It’s special to be off on Christmas Day. I don’t think it’s happened in my Premier League career so far. I’ll make the most of being with my family and enjoy it all.”
The move comes as the Premier League features only one fixture on Boxing Day (December 26), reducing the usual congestion. Liverpool’s game falls on the 27th, providing a window for recovery and personal time. The squad celebrated together with a Christmas dinner on the evening after the Tottenham win, fostering team spirit before dispersing.
Slot, in his second season managing Liverpool, has emphasized player welfare amid a demanding calendar. His approach includes strategic rest periods, contributing to recent improved form after a challenging earlier stretch. The team sits level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, aiming to climb higher with consistent results.
Van Dijk also addressed the Tottenham match, where goals from Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike secured the points despite a late Richarlison strike and red cards for Spurs players Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero. He confirmed speaking privately with Simons, his Netherlands international teammate, about the dismissal but declined to share details.
The captain stressed focus moving forward: “The aim is to try to win every game ahead of us. Unfortunately this season has had a lot of difficult moments in terms of results and performances as well. But all we can try to do is get better.”

Liverpool’s festive period includes the Wolves clash, followed by further matches as the campaign intensifies. Slot’s decision reflects consideration for work-life balance, particularly during holidays when players are often away from loved ones due to training and games.
The team has shown resilience, navigating injuries and form dips while integrating new tactics under Slot. Recent wins have boosted morale, with the Christmas break offering a timely recharge.
Van Dijk’s comments highlight the human side of professional football, where small adjustments can significantly impact players’ wellbeing.
As families across the country prepare for celebrations, Liverpool’s squad joins in the spirit, thanks to their manager’s thoughtful planning.
