A disturbing new detail has emerged in one of the most harrowing child abuse and murder cases to reach the British courts in recent years. During the ongoing trial at Preston Crown Court, a leading Home Office pathologist testified that 13-month-old Preston Davey had what appeared to be a human bite mark on his bottom just weeks before his tragic death in July 2023.

The revelation came as part of harrowing medical evidence presented to the jury, painting a picture of sustained physical, emotional, and sexual abuse allegedly suffered by the toddler while in the care of the two men in the process of adopting him.

Jamie Varley, 37, a former secondary school teacher, stands accused of murdering Preston, as well as multiple counts of sexual assault and cruelty to a child. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, is charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and faces similar allegations of sexual abuse and cruelty. Both men deny all charges.

Preston Davey was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital on the evening of July 27, 2023, by Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley. He was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. Despite efforts by medical staff, the little boy could not be saved and was pronounced dead a short time later.

A post-mortem examination conducted by Dr Alison Armour revealed approximately 40 separate injuries on Preston’s small body. These included around 30 external bruises, a fracture to his upper left arm, and internal bruising to his throat, bottom, and bladder. Many of the injuries were described by the pathologist as “most unusual” in their nature and distribution.

One of the most shocking pieces of evidence presented in court was a photograph taken around two weeks before Preston’s death. The image, captured on one of the defendants’ phones, showed the toddler standing naked in a garden paddling pool. A darker, circular mark, approximately 3.5cm in diameter and turning slightly purple, was visible on his right buttock.

Dr Armour told the court: “It is my view, sir, it most likely represents a human bite mark.” She explained that the size, shape, and configuration of the bruise — including an unmarked area of skin in the centre — were consistent with an adult human bite. Prosecuting counsel Peter Wright KC pressed the expert on her conclusion, and Dr Armour reaffirmed that the mark aligned closely with the pattern expected from human teeth.

This alleged bite mark was said to have been present around six weeks before Preston’s death, suggesting a pattern of ongoing physical abuse rather than an isolated incident. The court also heard evidence of fingertip bruising on the child, which experts linked to gripping, pinching, or prodding.

Beyond the visible external marks, Dr Armour’s testimony addressed internal findings consistent with sexual abuse. Injuries to intimate areas were described in detail, further supporting the prosecution’s case that Preston suffered prolonged and severe ill-treatment in the final months of his short life.

The trial has heard that Preston was placed with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley as part of the adoption process. He was known to the couple as Elijah during this period. Foster carers who had previously looked after him described him as a “really lovely baby,” making the allegations against his adoptive parents even more heartbreaking for those following the case.

Varley was recorded on police body-worn camera at the hospital, collapsing in distress and reportedly saying phrases such as “I’m going to hell” while holding the deceased child. These emotional scenes have been played in court, though prosecutors argue that Varley’s account of how Preston became unresponsive is inconsistent with the medical evidence.

The defence maintains that the injuries may have other explanations and that the defendants did not cause Preston’s death. However, the accumulation of medical testimony, photographic evidence, and the pattern of injuries has presented a compelling and deeply distressing narrative for the jury.

This case has raised broader questions about the safeguarding processes in adoption and fostering systems. How a child with such extensive injuries could allegedly go unnoticed for weeks or months is a question many observers are asking. Social services and medical professionals who had contact with Preston during this period are expected to face scrutiny as the trial continues.
