Disturbing new details continue to emerge in one of the UK’s most shocking child abuse cases, including a heartbreaking video showing an adoptive father repeatedly startling a tired toddler awake by shouting “boo” directly at him just weeks before the child’s death.
The case has drawn national attention following the conviction of former teacher Jamie Varley, who was found guilty of murdering his 13-month-old adopted son, Preston Davey, along with multiple sexual abuse and child cruelty offenses.
As the court proceedings concluded, investigators released evidence that has become one of the most talked-about aspects of the case: a video showing Preston visibly exhausted and struggling to stay awake while sitting near his adoptive father.
In the footage, the soundtrack from Disney’s Moana can reportedly be heard playing in the background as the toddler repeatedly closes his eyes.
Each time the child appears to drift off to sleep, Varley suddenly shouts “boo” directly at him, startling him awake.
The frightened toddler can be seen reacting with distress as he is repeatedly prevented from resting.
For many who have followed the case, the video has become a symbol of the psychological cruelty prosecutors say Preston endured during the final months of his life.

A Child Who Could Not Escape
According to evidence presented during the trial, Preston moved into the care of Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, in April 2023 after a foster and adoption placement process.
Witnesses described Preston as a happy and cheerful child before entering the couple’s home.
However, concerns began emerging within weeks.
Medical records showed multiple hospital visits, including treatment for a fractured elbow and other injuries that later raised serious safeguarding questions.
Experts who reviewed photographs and videos of the child told the court that Preston’s demeanor appeared to change dramatically over time.
Instead of the smiling infant people remembered, he was increasingly described as withdrawn and emotionally detached.
A child abuse specialist testified that the behavior was consistent with what is sometimes called “frozen watchfulness,” a trauma response observed in abused children who become hyper-alert to potential threats around them.
Disturbing Evidence Revealed
The prosecution argued that the abuse Preston suffered was not limited to physical harm.
The video showing Varley yelling “boo” at the exhausted toddler became a particularly disturbing piece of evidence because it appeared to show deliberate efforts to prevent the child from sleeping despite obvious signs of fatigue.
Court testimony revealed that Varley had previously complained to family members about sleep deprivation caused by the child waking during the night.
Messages presented during the trial suggested he was frustrated by the demands of caring for a young child.
Prosecutors argued that those frustrations eventually escalated into a pattern of cruelty and abuse.
The court heard evidence that Preston suffered numerous non-accidental injuries while living in the household.
Investigators also uncovered indecent images and videos involving the child, leading to multiple convictions connected to sexual abuse.
The Final Days
The case reached its tragic conclusion in July 2023.
Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley brought Preston to a hospital emergency department after claiming he had become unresponsive following a bath-time incident.
Medical staff immediately launched intensive efforts to save the child.
Despite nearly an hour of treatment, doctors were ultimately unable to revive him.
A subsequent investigation determined that the explanation provided by the adults did not match the medical evidence.
Experts found no signs of drowning and concluded that Preston died from an acute airway obstruction.
As investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s death, the full extent of the abuse began to emerge.
Questions Over Missed Opportunities
The case has also raised serious concerns about child protection procedures.
Evidence presented during the proceedings suggested that multiple warning signs had been reported before Preston’s death.
Healthcare professionals, safeguarding teams, social workers, and other agencies had interactions with the family in the months leading up to the tragedy.
Despite concerns being raised on several occasions, no intervention ultimately removed Preston from the home.
The revelations have prompted renewed scrutiny of how warning signs were handled and whether opportunities to protect the child were missed.
Sentencing Approaches
Following the guilty verdicts, attention has now shifted to sentencing.
Varley was convicted of murder, sexual assault, child cruelty, grievous bodily harm, and multiple offenses relating to indecent images of a child.
McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of causing or allowing the death of a child, child cruelty offenses, and sexual assault-related charges.
Both men are expected to receive their sentences shortly.
For many observers, however, the image that remains most difficult to forget is not from the courtroom, but from the video itself: a tired toddler repeatedly trying to fall asleep, only to be jolted awake as an adult shouts “boo” in his face.
