A devastated Italian scientist who lost both his wife and daughter in the deadly Maldives cave diving tragedy is now publicly questioning how such an experienced diver could have failed to survive the catastrophic underwater excursion.
Carlo Sommacal spoke emotionally after his wife, Monica Montefalcone, 52, and their 20-year-old daughter, Giorgia Sommacal, were among five divers who never resurfaced during the fatal cave dive near Vaavu Atoll on Thursday.
The tragedy unfolded during an advanced underwater excursion roughly 160 feet below the surface inside a cave system near the island of Alimatha. Rescue teams later launched an extensive recovery mission after the divers failed to return.
Now, Carlo Sommacal says he cannot believe the disaster resulted from simple recklessness or poor judgment.

“The only certainty I have is that my wife is among the best divers on the face of the earth,” he told Italian newspaper La Repubblica. He also insisted Monica was extremely disciplined and would never knowingly endanger her daughter or other members of the diving group.
His statements have intensified public scrutiny surrounding exactly what may have happened deep inside the underwater cave system.
Maritime safety experts explain that highly experienced divers can still become trapped or overwhelmed in cave environments if sudden environmental changes, equipment failures, visibility collapse, strong currents, navigation problems, or oxygen complications occur unexpectedly.
Underwater cave systems are widely considered among the most dangerous environments in recreational and technical diving because divers often operate in confined spaces where rapid emergency ascent is impossible.
Technical specialists note that at depths approaching 160 feet, even minor errors or unexpected complications can become fatal within moments.
Authorities in the Maldives continue investigating the tragedy and have not publicly released final conclusions regarding what caused the divers to become trapped or unable to resurface safely.
Investigators are expected to review dive computer data, oxygen systems, underwater navigation records, environmental conditions, communication logs, and safety procedures connected to the excursion.
The case has drawn international attention partly because of the victims’ extensive diving experience, particularly Monica Montefalcone’s reputation among those familiar with advanced underwater exploration.
Friends and colleagues described her as cautious, highly trained, and deeply knowledgeable about diving safety — characteristics that have made the circumstances surrounding the tragedy even harder for loved ones to understand.
Mental health experts say families often struggle intensely after sudden disasters involving experienced individuals because survivors search for explanations that feel logically consistent with the victim’s skill level and personality.
Meanwhile, the tragedy has reignited broader debate within the diving community regarding safety oversight, risk assessment, and the growing popularity of extreme underwater tourism in tropical destinations.
Social media discussion surrounding the incident has become increasingly emotional, especially after Carlo Sommacal’s public comments suggesting that “something happened down there” beyond ordinary diving error.
Authorities continue urging the public not to spread unsupported conspiracy theories while forensic and maritime investigations remain ongoing. Officials stressed that underwater fatalities in cave systems frequently involve complex combinations of environmental and technical factors that may take significant time to fully reconstruct.
As recovery teams and investigators continue piecing together the divers’ final moments beneath the surface, the tragedy remains one of the Maldives’ most haunting recent maritime disasters — not only because of the lives lost, but because even those who knew the ocean best may have encountered something in the darkness they could not escape.
